re: Annabelle: Creation (2017, D: David F. Sandberg) -- The Conjuring spinoff

Loved it - hated the first but this has WAY more creativity and style than I had anticipated. Good characters, great cinematography and lots of fun jumps, it definitely fits in with the first 2 Conjuring movies. Best seen with an audience and while it doesn't reinvent the wheel, it doesn't have to - leap years better than Lights Out. 4/5

Also, there is a SHORT 5 second stinger at the end if you're into that kind of thing.

re: Annabelle: Creation (2017, D: David F. Sandberg) -- The Conjuring spinoff

the only gripe I have about the film is that I felt the first 20 minutes dragged. Thought the 'setup' could have been trimmed to 10 minutes to get to the 'good stuff' earlier..

Early Reviews are starting to roll in:

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/annabelle_creation (100% with 13 reviews)

Second year in a row where an origin sequel appears to be substantially better than the original.

Saw it tonight and liked it alot. Best horror movie of the year so far, think only "It" will end up challenging it. Sandberg is a name to remember in the horror genre, hope we see alot more films by him.

re: Annabelle: Creation (2017, D: David F. Sandberg) -- The Conjuring spinoff

got to see it again last night! Surprised I actually enjoyed it more the 2nd time around. I really could appreciate the first 20 minutes (which bored/bothered me the first time). It is a very well crafted horror film. it is really amazing the scares Sandberg got out of a porcelain doll that can only move its head and eyes! The girls were even better the 2nd time and reminded me that - with the sole exception of 1 man (father) who is really more of a backdrop than anything, this is a female driven film. Female protagonist and female antagonist. Didn't realize that the first time... great fun. I actually look forward seeing it again on blu-ray...high replay value.

Opens this weekend.

RT score has dropped a bit... but the consensus seems to be this is really solid.

$4M in Thursday showings. That's stronger than Conjuring 2. Using the same multiplier that's a $47M, probably won't get to that number IMO, but seems like $40-45M is doable.

Would be interesting if it does... and then just imagine the monster opening IT is going to have.

And trailers for It are pretty much guaranteed to be attached to Annabelle as well to increase awareness.

True, especially since both are Warner releases.

IIRC, WB created a special trailer specifically to show in front of Annabelle. So, yep, awareness through the roof.

no IT trailer. But there was a clip, introduced by Stephen King.

good movie btw. People keep saying its better than the first. I thought it was on the same level as the original. But thats a compliment because I really dug both.

Never saw the first but the positive reviews have me interested somewhat. Haven't seen a horror film in theaters for quite a while.

^If you haven't seen the first, the ending to this one might be a headscratcher.

I'd probably see it after if I like it. This is a prequel right?

Maybe the last 10 seconds. I really wouldn't worry about it. I haven't seen Annabelle and there wasn't much to be confused about.

Spoiler:
I thought that was the younger Warrens getting involved or something, until I looked online.

I thought this was about as good as little horror/ghost stories can get. The story was rich and the frights were solid. For the same reasons I like The Conjuring and Insidious movies, everyone mostly makes logical choices, and still have to match wit with the supernatural. There aren't many moments where characters are making unreasonable choices, or holding back communications.

Was that The Nun that pushed the girl's wheelchair into the barn? It didn't seem like the other ghoul. Did the Nun follow the Sister around? If I had to guess, I'd say there's more to the Sister than we were told in this movie. She other purposely said that she didn't remember the Nun in the photo, or it caused some kind of psychological damage. Maybe that'll be explained in the next movie.

I'm happy to keep watching. These are really solid horror movies.

Saw this a week ago. The build-up during the first half of the film was fantastic but the film really lost my attention afterwards.

It's still better than Annabelle (2014).

re: Annabelle: Creation (2017, D: David F. Sandberg) -- The Conjuring spinoff

Just saw this and it was WAAAAAAY better than the first film. This one had better everything on a technical level. The script was still written by the same dude that wrote the first one, and I was only able to spot a few plot holes.

I did like the Conjuring-Verse tie-in for
Spoiler:
the evil nun in the photograph,
so that film looks to take place way before this prequel once it is released.

Cool tie-in with the first Annabelle film at the end, which is actually quite a downer.

Anyways, I need to watch Lights Out next.

re: Annabelle: Creation (2017, D: David F. Sandberg) -- The Conjuring spinoff

Sometimes I really don't get critics. This was the dumbest and most nonsensical horror movie I've seen in years (even for the genre). To even compare this to the 2 Conjuring flicks is an insult.

Yeah, it was technically well made and some of the scares were effective, but that certainly doesn't make a film good.

Spoiler:
- So that one demon could be inside a girl, outside in a barn, inside a dumbwaiter and controlling a scarecrow all at the same time?
- It needed the doll, because why? The main attraction of the movie was completely irrelevant.
- It could teleport, except when it couldn't?
- It could be contained by bible pages and crosses, except when it couldn't?
- Samuel dies in a horrible way, and is grotesquely displayed on the floor. "Hey, ambulance, pick up please. Oh well, nothing to see here."
- A nun? Sure why not. Reason? Who cares - TIE-IN!

At least be consistent in your nonsense.

Fuck this movie! I'll go re-watch The Conjuring to wash away the bad taste.
