It's Sony so they got a majority of the foreign box office due to self-releasing (giggity). But yeah that $90m doesn't include advertising in the US or other territories which had to be pretty substantial.

It did gross about $40m in BD/DVD sales in addition to the B.O. in addition to probably another $50m on various platform deals. When all is said and done, it probably made them a few million but a bit too close for comfort.

Also, how the fuck did that movie cost $90m to make?

Have you seen how much environmental CGI was used?

Pfft, like it was any better than this the CG in this no budget 2015 release (removed embed, it's the scene right after that I was trying to get to)

But yeah I know, still don't see how that brought them up to $90m.

unfortunately there's a clear gap in quality from the first one to the ones after that. The first one being much better than the others.

I only made it about halfway through the first book but from what I understand the same can be said for the trilogy of novels as well.

Add in the talent involved. Fincher, Reznor & Ross, the setups involved, etc. As a production, it can easily be seen how it can cost $90 million.

Another movie that made a profit but not the hundred bajillion zillion dollars that studios look for these days. So dump the cast.

Dumb Sony.

I was surprised how much I like TGWTDT and wanted to see a sequel. This I have no interest in though.

He also does a lot of takes from which he picks the performances that he likes and cuts & pastes different actors from different takes together in scenes.

Yeah, I don't know WHY they had huge expectations for it. It's an incredibly dark, dingy movie that features a graphic rape.

Hollywood is under the assumption that popular book = successful movie, with 15m copies sold in the US they figured this was a surefire hit.

The US version was released just before Christmas. It probably would have done better as an October/Fall release.

Fincher's lowest budget was $33m for Se7en and the highest was $150m for Benjamin Button.
Since being spoiled, I wonder what he would do with a very low budget?

I wish he'd make another movie as compelling as Se7en.

Probably make half a movie and demand more money.

Same here. He's made some very good to very decent movies, and while I think The Social Network is great, nothing compares to Se7en on his résumé.

I'm not sure if he could these days. He's like James Cameron in that he uses a lot of "toys" (CGI, elaborate camerawork, etc.) to get his movies to look how he wants. Add in lots and lots of takes a la Kubrick and you get a big budget.

He better hope that the international box office continues to save his ass when it comes to profits if he wants to continue playing with his expensive toys.

"What movie do you want to watch this Christmas?"

"The one where the goth chick gets tied up and violently ass-raped."
