scarface should be lumped with king of new york, new jack city, the killer.

I personally enjoy Carlito's Way more than Scarface.

Tony Montana is just scum and I thought Pacino's performance was way over the top. I know Scarface is a cult classic.

Carlito Brigante is at least a man who knew he did bad things, but was trying to change his path. There was some hope at the end for him.

Figured I would just post this little news item here rather than starting a new thread.

Goodfellas Actor Sues The Simpsons for Using His Likeness

http://www.people.com/article/goodfe...-sues-simpsons

Actor Frank Sivero, who played Goodfellas character Frankie Carbone, has filed a $250 million lawsuit against Fox Television Studios for basing one of The Simpsons's mob characters on his likeness.

I don't see it. Aside from the hair. Guess he has a trademark on that?

Yeah, I heard about that. I don't see him getting anywhere with his case though. It just reeks of deperation from a washed up actor.

He might end up with a little settlement.

It's also a good way to make sure he'll never work again.

20 years ago, he might have had a case.

I think he's hoping for Fox to toss a little money his way which is why he asked for such a large amount in the first place (seriously, 250 million?!). He'll never get anywhere near what he's asking for but I'm sure he's hoping he'll get a little just to get him to quit crying.

Considering he's had 25 years to sue since Legs was introduced in to the show, he looks foolish. Any stereotype mobster actor could sue for the same reason -- that's the point of the character.

If you haven't already watched, it's not even on the level of those other two. It's more of a fun guilty pleasure movie than anything else. The plot is pretty thin, the acting more along the lines of caricatures, and it's quite dated in some spots. It's basically just good to watch as a guy movie while drinking beer and eating pizza.

Also, Tarantino used the close-up shots in Scarface when Tony Montana goes into a rage for The Bride in the Kill Bill flicks. Nice homage there.

The hair, the nose, the heavy brow. Given that Louie first appeared the year after Goodfellas came out, and in an episode that was a general parody of mob movies with several other references to Goodfellas, I think he's right that the character was based upon him. But I don't see that making a winning lawsuit, what with the character being a parody and him waiting a quarter century to do anything about it.

He should just be flattered that The Simpsons used his likeness for a character and move on with his life. However, I guess if there's the possibility of a payday at the end of the tunnel then coming off like a dick is the way to go...

Yeah, that's what makes it so stupid. If he had said something earlier in the show's run after the character was introduced I could see more. At this point he just looks like an idiot looking to cash in. I mean seriously there's a bunch of mob films with similar looking characters that the character could supposedly be based off of (not saying it is but still). I guess its whatever as he may get a little bit of money thrown his way just so he shuts up but the whole thing is silly.

Yeah. You know that its just him looking for a handout since he hasn't had a notable role in ages.

Also for a better film more in the vein of The Godfather or Goodfellas I'd suggest Once Upon a Time in America. It isn't a perfect film but its a pretty good one and I think sometimes gets overlooked.

It does. Doesn't ever seem to get mentioned in the genre really. It wasn't until that I started to get into more films that I saw it. Nobody even mentions it as much as Leone's trio of Eastwood films. Or even Once Upon A Time in the West level of mention.

Re: I've Never seen Scarface, how does it rate compared to Godfather and Goodfellas ?

I only ever saw Once Upon A Time in America once on VHS years ago. I've been thinking about revisiting it, but all I remember about it is that I found its ungodly length unmanageable and being repulsed by the rape scenes.

There's an old urban legend, which probably isn't true, that a 90s punk-pop band called Blink 182 took their name from the number of times a particular profanity was used Scarface.

Yeah, it's not true.

Fast-forward to 0:39. It's pretty funny.

Re: I've Never seen Scarface, how does it rate compared to Godfather and Goodfellas ?

Yeah, what everyone else has said here so far. "Scarface" is good cheesy fun. But it's no where NEAR in the same neighborhood as "The Godfather" (or it's better sequel) and "Goodfellas". In fact, it's several suburbs away. Also, "Scarface" has not held up over time. But "The Godfather" and "Goodfellas" have. Want a better film to watch if you haven't already? Seek out "Bugsy", "Road to Perdition", "Donnie Brasco", "The Departed", "The Untouchables", "Casino" and "Eastern Promises".

Re: I've Never seen Scarface, how does it rate compared to Godfather and Goodfellas ?

May I suggest a shift in the topic? If Godfather and Goodfellas are number 1 & 2 (let us not debate the order) then what is the number 3 modern or post-modern American gangster film. If it's not Scarface then I don't really have an answer. Stuff like

"Bugsy", "Road to Perdition", "Donnie Brasco", "The Departed", "The Untouchables", "Eastern Promises"
These just don't do it for me. Good movies but not #3.

Godfather Part II obviously. I'd put GFII in front of GFI.

I wonder if they've seen the end of the movie, because it ends really really badly. Spoiler Alert: Scarface dies snorting a comical pile of cocaine, in a tacky-ass mansion that looks like if the Golden Girls won the lottery."

Goodfellas>The Godfather in my honest opinion. The Godfather is great and well made but its one of those films that I rarely feel the need to rewatch. Goodfellas I can watch just about any time whether I choose to pop in the Blu-ray or I catch it on tv and its already started.

Depending on how you define "gangster," all of these could qualify:

The 25th Hour
The Friends of Eddie Coyle
The Yakuza
Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
Jackie Brown

Re: I've Never seen Scarface, how does it rate compared to Godfather and Goodfellas ?

I'd also put Once Upon a Time in America in a top 10 of gangster flicks.

Godfather
Godfather Pt II
Goodfellas
Once Upon a Time in America

Don't ask me how'd I list them but for me... Pt. II is ahead of I, always. As to what is the best, I dunno.
