Each has its own particular place in the zeitgeist and needs to be judged both separately and in relation to the others. You should also see the original SCARFACE (1932) directed by Howard Hawks and starring Paul Muni and George Raft, which was made while the character it was based on (Al Capone) was still in power and running Chicago's bootlegging operations. There's a story that Capone got his own screening of the film. The story arc in the 1932 film is virtually the same as in De Palma's film but is told in half the running time. I would argue that SCARFACE (1932) was the first film to master the vocabulary of the modern action film.

It's the hollow, coked up 80's version of those two films. Awesome!
I'm addicted to the way De Palma move the camera around. And the way the camera does or does not show stuff. Even when the movie is trashed, like Snake Eyes, I can enjoy it because of this. Because nobody else does it.

It's great. It's nothing like the other two, though. It's not even in the same fuckin' ballpark!

It's great, but it's nothing like the other two. It's not even in the same league.

Except for that damn song De Palma thought would be great. Irks me like hell when I hear it in this film.

Or is it E.G. Daily's "I'm Hot Tonight"? She certainly was, back in the day...
Which 80s flick had that song "Are You Ready For The Sex Girls"...? Subtlety as art!

While not a great song, it fits the film and the era perfect. Pure 80's cheese ala Kenny Loggins or Survivor.

I also recommend picking up all nine seasons of Scarf Ace, A&E's reality show about the high-fashion accessory trade. It's mesmerizing.

It's HUGELY iconic, that black and white poster has spawned God knows how many T-shirts, reprints, knockoffs, parodies, homages and such, and many of the lines are quotable and have entered the pop culture consciousness. But I think the movie is way too bloated and over the top, and I eventually grew bored with its excesses, rivers of blood, profanity, and screaming. The other filmed mentioned have more depth and intelligence behind them. But the DePalma film has a huge following, though personally, I like the Hawks film better.
And I happen to like the Eagles.

Honestly? While the first 15 or 20 minutes is pretty good, the rest kind of sucks. It's a coked out mess. The script is a joke except for Pacino's little friend.
I'm not a fan.
Goodfellas is a great movie. Scarface? Not so much.
