Well yea there's a billion things they could've done better with that story.
I found that movie just godawful. Didn't make an ounce of sense. Only cool part was Spock fighting Khan.

Re: Star Trek 3 (2016)
My initial dream idea for a Khan story in nuTrek would have been the Klingons finding the Botany Bay, reviving Khan, and then having Khan kick ass all the way up the Klingon hierarchy until he was their leader.
The movie would then involve Khan leading the Klingon Empire in a war against the Federation.
If you're going to bring Khan back, then GO BIG.

I have a bad feeling about this film already to be honest. Not having a director at this point and wanting to start shooting soon to release by 2016 doesn't seem like the best idea to me. Hopefully this film doesn't just turn out rushed to make a release date. I get that Paramount probably wants this out for the 50th anniversary of the franchise but I dunno.

A big blockbuster like a Star Trek film though I dunno. There's a lot that goes into a film like this and I don't want it done half assed.

Re: Star Trek 3 (2016, D: Not Orci)
Khan leading the Klingons is the sort of fanboy nonsense that ruined Enterprise.
If they had to bring Khan back, they should've kept it simple and straightforward -- Starfleet receives a distress call from a distant colony saying they're under attack, but the transmission is cut off before they can say who's attacking them. The only starship in the vicinity doesn't respond to orders, so Starfleet dispatches the Enterprise to find out what's happening. On the way, the Entprise comes in contact with the other starship, which doesn't respond to voice communications, but uses a signal light to explain that their comm systems are down. Kirk accepts this and decides to lower shields so they can beam spare parts over. Suddenly the other ship opens fire and the Enterprise only barely manages to escape.
The Enterprise finds the Botany Bay floating in space. Kirk and Spock beam over to investigate and find some members of the other ship's crew. They explain that they found the BB adrift in space and revived its passengers. After that things played out pretty much the same as in Space Seed, except the other ship's captain wasn't as awesome as Kirk and Khan managed to gain control of the ship.
The Enterprise tracks down the other starship in orbit of the colony that sent the distress call. Khan's already taken over the place and is forcing the colonists to join his cause. Kirk's in a tough position because he can't go all out against Khan without killing innocent civilians, but he can't very well let Khan go. Spock comes up with some kind of risky plan that will let them get on board the other ship and fight Khan's people directly. There's a big final battle, Khan quotes classic literature, Kirk kicks his ass, the end.
Like what, Alien3?

When I was a kid, I thought Khan was a Klingon for the longest time because of his superior strength and that Klingon quote he used.
As for Into Darkness, I also think a redo of Space Seed would have been far better than a redo of Wrath. The idea posted a few posts up about Khan leading colonists also would have been better.

I'd like to see what Steve McQueen could do with the material, possibly bringing in Fassbender as a Romulan.

B) They threw out the script.
C) They shut down pre-production.
Not good signs. Shooting in the spring to get it out for summer 2016 is doable but tight and they would need an entirely new shooting script in basically 4 months.
More realistically they start shooting in the fall for a fall/winter 2016 release. That's if they can get all their ducks in a row.
Also Bad Robot is still producing, so they'd need writers and directors that are palatable to them.
In short, I don't see how any movie without a director, without a script, and that has shut down pre-production can in any way be seen as a sure thing to ever get made.

They pretty much have to release Star Trek 3 in 2016 for the 50th anniversary of the franchise. They could aim for a November 2016 release to give them more time. December is a no-no as they have to avoid being trampled by Avatar 2.

Re: Star Trek 3 (2016, D: Not Orci)
I think they the third film should bring back the Talosians from the original series (with their looks more updated and streamlined, of course) and involve a the Romulans wanting to possess their power of illusion, which leads the Klingons and the Federation to follow suit. Vina could try and romance Captain Kirk but also warn him of the extreme danger in pursuing this power.
It could be really trippy and thought-provoking sci fi film and a great thematic tie-in to the pilot episode that started it all.

Just announced. Paramount hired Justin Lin who directed the Fast and Furious movies to direct.

Sounds good, we know he can do action and the banter between characters; it will be interesting how he handles a bigger universe like Star Trek.

re: Star Trek Beyond [no colon] (2016, D: Justin Lin)
Seems like a decent enough choice. All of the films in The Fast & The Furious franchise he's directed have been pretty well done. Not sure how he'll do with sci-fi but I think he can pull off a decent film at least.
All the things you mentioned aren't good signs for a film obviously, but its no question that Paramount would eventually do a future entry in the franchise. This isn't just some no name film but one of the biggest money makers and iconic franchises they have. Plus now they have a director hired at least. Like I said I think it is iffy as to whether or not the film gets released in 2016 or how good it'll turn out if it is released by then.

That's appropriate in so many ways. Putting aside the ADD-style editing, the previous two movies have about as much depth as a Fast and Furious movie.
