I always liked Mick Lasalle's response to this question in his q & a column in the san francisco chronicle:

Cage made a choice. I think of him as like Tim Holt, who acted in "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" and "The Magnificent Ambersons" but chose ultimately to become a cowboy actor, or Joel McCrea, who, after a serious career, did more or less the same thing. They made a contribution to the art, and then decided to ride off into the sunset and make money. To a critic, that seems crazy, but all a critic cares about is good movies. There are other things in life, and I can't imagine a decision of that kind is ever made lightly. So I'm sorry about Cage, but it's his business.

I've always been a bit bewildered by his success. Well, his early success.
I don't think he's all that good an actor, he's hammy and twitchy. Plus, he's as ugly as a hatful of busted assholes.
He's made a couple of good action flicks, but I don't care for most of his dramatic entries.

He's definitely mixed for me as an actor. I really like Raising Arizona, Face/Off, The Rock, and the National Treasure films but he's done his share of crap recently too. I'm sure as was mentioned though a lot of it is probably just him trying to make some quick paychecks due to his financial difficulties. The spoof trailer for the Wicker Man where it's made out to be a comedy gets me every damn time still

If I need a good laugh, I'll throw in a Cage movie. Serious actor? He never was. Very few times he has been good, but most of the time, a complete joke.

He can get a bit "Cagey," but in the right role he's a great presence.
Nobody here has yet mentioned Bringing out the Dead. Go see that.

Thought his career was in decline a few years ago but then he did Kickass and Bad Lieutenant. I thought those were both great performances from him. As long as he can deliver every once in a while, his selling out doesn't bother me.

I have accepted that in this shit life we must chuck some things, which includes most of his movies. Every once in a while though he still turns in a good performance and I tend to remember those over his bad ones.
