To be fair, the Ebert write-up of the conference is worth reading.

Re: Lars Von Trier's Melancholia, end of the world movie, Gainsbourg cast

Controversial Danish director Lars Von Trier apologized Wednesday for saying he was a Nazi, assuring people that despite his earlier comments, he was not "anti-Semitic or racially prejudiced in any way."
Earlier Wednesday, he apparently felt comfortable enough with the crowd at Cannes to admit he sympathizes with Hitler and to refer to himself as a Nazi—albeit one who loves Jewish people.
Promoting his new film about the end of the world, “Melancholia,” at the festival, Von Trier told the crowd of international press from around the world at the Cannes press conference that he originally believed himself to be Jewish before finding out otherwise.
“I really wanted to be a Jew and then I found out I was really a Nazi which also gave me some pleasure. What can I say, I understand Hitler. I think he did his wrong things…but I understand the man. He’s not what you would call a good guy but I understand him, I sympathize with him.”
Von Trier tried to back off his statements when the crowd grew obviously uncomfortable.

“I’m not against the Jews. I am of course very much for the Jews. How can I get out of this sentence, ok I’m a Nazi,” the director said.
Von Trier didn’t let the subject drop. When a reporter asked him if he would be producing a Hollywood blockbuster sometime soon he responded with another off-color remark about the Nazi extermination of the Jews in the Holocaust..
“We Nazis have a tendency to try to do things on a greater scale, maybe I could do ‘The Final Solution,’” Von Trier said, attempting a joke.
No one else on the panel, which included actress Kirsten Dunst, Stellan Skarsgård and John Hurt laughed.
"If I have hurt someone this morning by the words I said at the press conference, I sincerely apologize," he said in an email sent to AFP by Meta Louise Foldager, a producer of "Melancholia".
"I am not anti-Semitic or racially prejudiced in any way, nor am I a Nazi."

Seeing is better than reading. Dunst is so noticeably uncomfortable the last few minutes.

Ha ha. I only watched a few minutes at the end, but yeah I bet she would have loved to just duck underneath the table or something. I'm sure she was thinking "just shut up"

And now he's been thrown out of the competition.
Jesus, this is ridiculous.

Yep, from now on his officially "persona non grata".

I'm guessing oversensitivity is causing everyone to freak out.
I just find it stupid. An inappropriate joke is still just a joke.

That's stupid. *sigh* Von Trier did a shitty joke....which only made it worse cuz the bastard can't tell a joke for the life of him. Sooooo...what now? They don't show his film....not they all go home? Goddamn it, Von Trier. Just shut the fuck and answer coherently.

nvm...reading up on it. It's still in competition, LVT himself, and not the film, is kicked out..and if it wins..someone else has to pick it up.

Ok, that's better but the whole thing is just fucking stupid.

I hate this kind of oversensitivity on behalf of others. I'm sure the actual holocaust survivors don't give a shit about what some fool says in Cannes. They are not defined by what happened to them during the war. And they certainly don't need to be victimized by someone who wasn't even born back then.

^ Sure and "Lars Von Trier is a fucking nazi!!" is a much better headline than "Lars Von Trier joke bombs"

His comments didn't sound like a joke to me. There were two times when he was trying to make a joke out of it but overall his comments sounded like he was serious.

Either way, I don't care but you can't go around saying you understand Hitler and you're a Nazi (which were not his "jokes") and not expect any action to be taken against you.

It became obvious that he was digging a hole for himself that he couldn't get out of.

B-b-b-but he's an auteur! Who cares if he says Hitler wasn't so bad and Albert Speer was totally awesome? We should get down and suck his cock like he's Vincent Gallo and we're Chloe Sevigny!

Then you heard it wrong. It was very obviously not serious.
It's what he does. He made a movie that's uncontroversial, so he creates controversy in another way. And just like always EVERYBODY falls for it.

He's a master at getting worldwide attention and PR. It happens every damn time he's down there. You'd think the people in Cannes knew him by now.

Anyways, I'm sure his plenty satisfied. He just got a shit ton of extra buzz around his movie.

I wouldn't be so certain about either of these. Next month I'll be visiting with my wife's uncle, a film professor who fled Nazi Germany as a boy (though there's no direct holocaust connection with him). I'll be curious to get his perspective on this.

It's been my experience that holocaust survivors aren't so crazy about statements like this.

Having said that, this does seem blown out of proportion.

Re: Lars Von Trier's Melancholia, end of the world movie, Gainsbourg cast

just watching the video, his comments are so silly and meaningless that anyone taking them serious, it says more about them than LVT. we're in such a stupid culture that only take everything at face value, in the most literal way. thats why movies like 'thor' and 'captain america' are all people care about.
