Lars Von Trier's Melancholia, end of the world movie, Gainsbourg cast
Various bits and pieces of news on Lars Von Trier's Melancholia have been surfacing over the last few days, so here, just for you, is a handy one-stop round-up on the Danish end of the World.
First up, Allo Cine broke the news that Charlotte Gainsbourg will be starring (replacing Penelope Cruz, who opted out very early on). Clearly Gainsbourg's ordeal-by-Willem in Antichrist has not put her off working with Von Trier a second time. We think we're right in saying that she's his first ever returning leading lady. Has he found a muse?
There's some dry stuff over at Variety about Melancholia's multinational financing package that's just come together, courtesy of production companies Slot Machine (France), Zentropa International Koln (Germany), Zentropa Entertainment (Denmark: Von Trier's company), and Memfis Film International and Trolhattan Film (both Sweden). Basically, it's a very similar set-up to Antichrist.
And finally, Zentropa Ent. has (apparently) released what we suppose you'd call some "teaser art". It doesn't appear to be up on their actual website however, so have a look at it at Bloody Disgusting. Yup, it's Earth being dwarfed by a mysterious big, new planet. Which rather sums up all anyone knows of the plot so far.
Von Trier's "psychological disaster movie" will shoot for under $10m. This means Von Trier will be ending the world for $190m less than Roland Emmerich. Tell you what though, we bet Melancholia will be scarier than 2012.

I've liked or loved every single one of his films (though I'm still trying to process "Antichrist" and haven't seen "The Idiots") - I'll be going to see this as soon as it hits theaters (though that probably won't be for a while, especially out here in Utah.)
I'll also gladly pay to see that crazy "Taxi Driver" remake/sequel/thingy if it ever actually happens.

Its funny, Antichrist is the only movie i've ever seen in theaters, where people were litterally shouting and cussing at the screen

I imagine we'll get something closer to "Last Night" than "2012." Can't wait.

Yeah - "Antichrist" has a 49 on Metacritic and a 48% on Rottentomatoes. I guess you could say that that's still too high - but, well, I think it accurately reflects the fact that it's a divisive film.
-
Anyways, from the few interviews I've read he does come off as arrogant (I believe he called himself the greatest director in the world at one point) and maybe a bit pretentious (though I think that phrase is incredibly overused on the internet) - but the films themselves aren't overrated at all. If anything, films like "Europa" and "The Boss of It All" are actually underrated.

And this coming from the guy with so much crap in his movie collection.
Radiohead might be overrated by some but they're sure as hell of a good band. Maybe you could understand good music, you wouldn't make such a stupid name. Radiohead is far from pretentious and arrogant. I think there really is a riot in your skull.
