Re: Gilligan's Island
Ugh! That was one of the wretched episodes during the last two seasons of "Roseanne". Almost all of the episodes those last two seasons were absolutely terrible. Almost like they got new writers. But EVERY single episode of the last season was unwatchable.
Back to the movie. It'll be as bad as that "Beverly Hillbillies" movie. If not worse.

Re: Gilligan's Island
if they want this film to be even remotely interesting, I suggest making it extremely politically IN-correct.
Gilligan should be played by a black man, and the rest of the cast should be white. The skipper should treat Gilligan exactly the same way he did on the TV show, but being that the skipper is white and Gilligan is black, you know racism is going to be rampant in the news. And since there's no such thing as "bad publicity," this could make this film some kind of a hit.
The setting should be 1964, as it was on the TV show, and have the white people as intolerant towards blacks as they would be in this era before "enlightenment." Civil Rights in 1964 wasn't what it was yet to become, as Martin Luther King, Jr was still fighting the good fight.
You're saying: why would the Skipper even have a black 1st mate? Look, I'm no Hollywood writer, but if I was, you could say the reason was because the Skipper got Gilligan to work at very little pay.

I dunno, 's startin' to sound too much like "The Admirable Crichton" (by J. M. Barrie, author of Peter Pan). Which was made into a musical, WE'RE NOT DRESSING (1934), with Bing Crosby, Carole Lombard, Ethel Merman and Burns and Allen. Look it up.

Two words: Gilligan's Planet.
By that point I think Roseanne became too bossy and too controlling, which is why I feel the show lost it's heart. The focus seemed to be more on situations that would require her to be bossy/controlling and less about everyday (realistic) issues.

It would be great to see them again, and nice of any re-make producers to include them in some way, but probably not in featured roles like that. I think it would be a little too distracting, even if they were still good enough actors to perform the roles well.

I do wish they'd find a role for Dawn Wells. I remember when "Seinfeld" did its last show, she wrote a piece for the New York Times op-ed page in which she lamented never leaving Gilligan's Island. In some major way, because the characters never got off the island, she remained psychologically stuck there all her life. Sad.

Re: Gilligan's Island
EXCLUSIVE: Remember Gilligan’s Island, the venerable 1960s TV series about seven castaways who wind up stranded on a tropical island after a torrential storm shipwrecks their yacht The S.S. Minnow? Warner Bros is charting a course for a feature film based on the series. It will be fashioned as a star vessel for Book Of Mormon‘s Josh Gad. Gad, Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez will write the script. Lloyd Schwartz, Ross Schwartz, Tracey Silvers and Cathy Silvers will be executive producers. They’re not saying what character Gad would play, but the title character seems a possibility, though he could conceivably play The Skipper.
The original series with the catchy theme song was created by Sherwood Schwartz, and starred Bob Denver as Gilligan, Alan Hale Jr as Skipper, Jim Backus and Natalie Schafer as Thurston and Lovey Howell, Russell Johnson as The Professor, Dawn Wells as Mary Ann, and Tina Louise as Ginger. A three-hour charter boat tour from Honolulu turned into a three-season stay on CBS and three follow-up telepics as the marooned shipmates thrived in syndication with the family audience.

I thought Hollywood would have realized that this is a bad idea since churning out terrible movie after terrible movie based on old TV shows in the mid to late '90s.

If they can make fun of it the way The Brady Bunch did, could be funny. But I can't stand Josh Gad.

Interesting cast they have lined up, I'm interested in what Herzog can do with the material.

This premise has been in development hell since at least the 90s. I remember reading Corona Coming Attractions in like 1997 saying it was coming soon with Julia-Louis Dreyfuss as Mary Ann.
Gilligan's Island was an actual sitcom so to me there isn't a need for a big-screen adaptation. Most movies based off of TV shows that actually work is when they pretty much just parody the source material (i.e. the Brady Bunch movies and 21 Jump Street).

re: Gilligan's Island: The Movie
Years ago (during the 90s '60s-TV-Show-Turned-Motion-Picture boom that occurred in the wake of The Addams Family) I worked on a treatment for a Gilligan's Island movie as a creative writing exercise. I went all Terrence Malick on it, sort of a Days Of Heaven take on the property; played it straight as a contemplative tone-poem-esque exercise, with 'Gilligan' as a fait-accompli narrator. An allegory of sorts that human constructs without ethical constraints leads to ruin (Mr. Howell = Capitalism, Skipper = Military, Professor = Science, etc.)
It would have made, in all likelihood, a terrible movie. The Mrs. Howell/Ginger lesbian suicide pact was exploitative titillation/shock value at its worst.
