an update from twitch.com
Twitch has learned that Spike Lee is currently in talks to direct the long-rumored Hollywood remake of Park Chan-Wook´s Oldboy.
Word of a US remake of the Park Chan-Wook revenge classic first surfaced in 2008 with word that both Steven Spielberg (in some capacity) and Will Smith were eyeing the project and now it appears to finally be moving ahead.
The film is set up at Mandate with Doug Davison and Roy Lee producing and Mark Protosevich (Thor, I Am Legend) writing the script.
Lee is a shocking but intriguing prospect to direct this material and a damn sight more interesting than most of the director´s whose names have been floated as possibilities over the years. As for Smith, there´s no word yet if he is still involved but the man did just refuse the lead role of Tarantino´s Django Unchained, which would suggest he´s got something else in the works.

I don't want a remake, but Spike Lee is interesting enough as a director to make me check it out if true.

Maybe he refused it so he can do that Annie remake with his whole family....not sure which idea makes me more ill. Wait - I think all of it does.

Mixed feelings on Lee for this one, and for some reason it now seems like Clive Owen would be in the lead role.

I agree with Dr. Mabuse, this is worse news than Spielberg doing it.

not only is this worse news, but it's rather hypocritical of Spike Lee to attach himself to this project after publicly lashing out against the Coen Brothers and Clint Eastwood for their "irresponsible" cinematic depictions of gratuitous violence and yadda yadda. Oldboy is a fucking revenge tale... with gratuitous violence. what a jackass.

As much as I like many of his films, I can't stand Spike Lee. Nothing but ego these days. Should have gone with an unknown. I would have loved to see someone with the talents of David Michod to tackle this. His direction on Animal Kingdom was sublime.

How quickly we've turned on Lee...as I recall, Inside Man was well received on this forum.

25th Hour is one of my favorite films, and it goes to some dark places effectively (though not as dark as Oldboy). I like this choice of director better than Spielberg, honestly.

Oldboy: A Spike Lee film, written by Tyler Perry, starring Will Smith, with music by Usher.
The resulting Internet rage would make Birth of a Nation seem like Crash...

Having said that, I don't think this film needs a remake, and I most likely will refrain from watching it.

I've been hoping this would not get an american remake.. Oldboy is a masterpiece and should not be remade. But Spike Lee? Really? The only way I can see myself watching this will depend on the cast and the word of mouth it gets.
