how was miramax related to the release of reservoir dogs?

first of all, i noticed that on the back of the box for the dvd it says "a miramax films release", second of all, the oriignal trailer that came out in 91 or 92 had the miramax logo at the begining. why then does artisan have the rights to the movie?

Same reason why Universal released Kill Bill Vol 1 in r2.

Very often studios have different distribution rights. Nuff said

If I recall correctly, the company that produced Reservoir Dogs (LIVE Entertainment, I think) retained the video distribution rights when they sold the theatrical release rights to Miramax. LIVE then either became Artisan or was bought by Artisan I suppose.

That sounds right. I think it works something like this: LIVE put up the money for the film to be made, then when it was shown at maybe Cannes or Sundance (I forget where exactly), Miramax snapped up the theatrical rights (but not video rights. This was before Disney bought them, so video distribution wasn't really one of their strong points then). I remember reading a Tarantino book and they explained all this. I might have to look through the book again when I get home for more accurate details (if someone doesn't beat me to it before then)
