Frankly, 1999 was a bad year for nominations across the board. First of all, The Thin Red Line got an Oscar nod for Best Picture, which is just wrong. Billy Bob Thornton got a nod for A Simple Plan -- love Billy Bob, but this was not his best role.

This was the year when Shakespeare in Love beat out some heavy, heavy hitters -- Saving Private Ryan being probably the front-runner, and the one most likely to stand the test of time.
Hmm...I'd say that A Simple Plan is Billy Bob Thornton's best performance ever.

The Thin Red Line was the best of the 5 films that were nominated in 1999, imo.

I think that Shakespeare in Love was a pretty clever concept, and I liked it reasonably well, but I think that Paltrow's best actress win for the film was a sham; her acting in the film seemed rather unremarkable to me.

TTRL was easily my favorite film of that year, if not the decade. And for once, an actual art film got nominated for a best picture.

As far as Shakespear in Love, bothe the directing and the acting were rather "blah", or at best, "meh". But the near perfect script by Tom Stoppard (Brazil) helped to elevate the film into a much better class than it had a right to.

Ok, I love the Queen (Latifah), and I loved, loved, loved Chicago, but I don't think her performance warranted an Oscar nom.

But, it's all subjective anyways.
