RE: Re-Cycle

the 5.1 soundtrack was quite good - but the movie's pro-life stance was very oft putting if you ask me.

Catching up a bit...

Hou Hsiao-Hsien Boxset (Chinese/Taiwanese) - back in stock, and still the more recent "blue box" version (I was hoping to get the initial release box). And for around $30 shipped, an absolute bargain.

Millennium Mambo (R4/Australia) - best looking transfer of any Hou film I've seen. I understand this wasn't necessarily embraced by longtime fans, but I love this film and I think it's as great as any of his others. In a way, I found it to be something like a millennial version of "Flowers of Shanghai".

Labyrinth of Passion (R2/UK) - OK transfer of a lousy quality print (but only DVD of this film in existence). Worth having if you're an Almodovar maniac - but IMO nowhere near as good as certain other early works like "Matador" and "What Have I Done To Deserve This?!?". And if you get the disc... be sure to watch the trailer afterwards. No spoilers, per se, but the quality of the transfer/print of the trailer is a million times better than the feature. Really makes you doubly aware of the lousy source element.

I've watched about half of them so far. Not sure how I managed to live without being region free - every day I discover wonderful new films that are unavailable in the US. Need to chill out on the spending though - even at 50% off, these titles end up being at least sixteen bucks each.

Oooooh, I LOVE "Open Hearts" and second the recommendation! My #1 film seen theatrically that year.

Taking care of another Korean fix:

The General's Son Trilogy - R3
The Show Must Go On - R3
May 18 - R3
M (preorder) - R3

Not an import, but I just picked off Oshii's Cinema trilogy (perfectly new) for $6 - Talking Head, Stray Dog and Red Spectacles.

Thinking about the new Kyung-gu film Venus and Mars but I'm left undecided until I can get some more feedback.

No Mercy for the Rude R3LE

It's an essential set. You can order it from XploitedCinema but it's a little cheaper to just buy it straight from Amazon.fr

Giles, regarding your purchase of Argento's latest (and given your previous feedback to me regarding the OAR for "Katyn"), are you aware that the Russian DVD has been cropped from 2.35 to 1.78...the UK disc (uncropped) is coming at the end of April. I actually asked DVDTalk member dvdigitall about this - meaning the Russian disc they were selling - but was not offered a reply.
