Bertolucci's 1900

Is this film available anywhere worldwide? And is the fully restored version that was making it's rounds in 1990?

I too have been looking for this film on DVD, as well as another of Bertolucci's films: The Sheltering Sky.

Considering that a number of years ago, Paramount (re)released "1900" in it's original European running time of 311 minutes, I keep holding my breath that it might get a Region 1 release, although I highly doubt it.

Bertolucci's had a rough deal on DVD so far. I bought a Japanese
16.9 release of The Confirmist a couple of years ago, no subtitles
but the print is pretty good, similar in quality to the Last Tango
release. Japanese DVDs come in CD-style jewel cases. Cool !

funny how this thread began as a 1900 DVD discussion, but quickly became one on 'The Sheltering Sky'. Chuck Tatum should just retitle the thread header as : Bertolucci's 'The Sheltering Sky

No, no. I meant I found Bertolucci's 1900 on dvd (parts I & II) for 35 euros each here in Greece. (I'm on vacation.) Is this available anywhere else? It's rather steep, but if it's the only place, I'm gonna pick them up before I leave.

the Italians are selling it for more so unless you cross into Bulgaria where titles are generally 25-40% cheaper than in Greece I think you've got a deal.

Pro-B

ps.
I hope I am reading your post correctly and you are indicating that the double set is 35 Euro total....if you mean 35 each....then..here's your answer...

By the way I had a thread about this with prices and other information if you would like to search a bit.....

Pro-B, i can't find your thread about 1900 anymore. I know you thought you had found that the Italian dvd had English subs, but then I remarked that that dvd you saw a review of was a doc. about the last century. That thread has disappeared i guess...

Anyhow, i am seeing this in theatres tomorrow! The full length Italian version non-stop!!! It's the first time i'm gonna see it, so i hope it's worth the excitement and the long runningtime. I love Bertolucci's work, so i have good hope!

Georgio I cant seem to be able to find that thread either

In fact the first one I had had some pretty good information in it (I believe MDM commented on it and the high price tag it had). To sum it up though currently there is no DVD version with English subs anywhere in the world. The latest info I have is that there is a Greek disc (but no additional info).

Let us know how the print looks after you see the film. Is this some sort of a restored/print version of the film. Hopefully Paramount will soon release this most anticipated by me and others film.

Either way post your thoughts after you see it.

Enjoy it.

You I found out that this film received an NC-17 re-rating when Paramount attempted to revive it for a theatrical re-issue back in 1990. I going to assume that's why it's not even on the radar at Paramount Home Video.

And I honestly don't think Paramount would spend the money to remaster a 5.5 hour film that would receive an NC-17 (i.e. no way to advertise the release of the DVD). Even if they planned on releasing their truncated 245min version, it would still be probablematic.

Hopely a company in the UK will release, or maybe the Italians will put one out with English subs...

Sorry for the late reaction, i have been very busy with my studies this week.

It wasn't a remastered print i saw, but it looked good enough. We had an introduction by somebody who told us about Bertolucci and this being his first epic. This viewing was the first of a whole series of Italian classics coming from now 'till the end of the year, including Il Posto and Fellini's Satyricon among others! The program is called Viaggio in Italia, and it was organized because of the enormous succes of La Meglio Gioventù (Best of Youth) this year, and because Italian movies are extremely popular here in Holland.

I LOVED the movie by the way! I was extremely lucky also, because i had the last ticket. I didn't think it was necessary to make a reservation, but the house was packed! Really, the people behind me in line had to be disappointed...

I understand the NC-17 by the way. I mean, almost everything the MPAA opposes in in here: Language, violence, explicit sexual content, child abuse and animal cruelty. No drug content as i recall. But when you have a girl jerking 2 guys off, you know this is never getting an R in the USA. Not the version i saw anyway...
