Re: New Third Man 4k at Cannes - theatrical release and blu-rays to follow
I sold my CC DVD (!) last year for around $120, planned on buying the SC BD. Now that this has been announced, I'll just wait for the new BD.

CC Blu looks good enough to me. Do I want the best presentation of a film that I can get? Sure I do, but I'm not rich to be constantly upgrading every movie in my library whenever a new version comes out. Where do you draw the line?

When you can flip an older version for 10x what the new one will cost, I think it's easy to know which side of the line that falls on.

In more relevant news, Amazon UK has a listing for 2 upcoming releases. There's a single disc BD and limited edition 4 disc combo pack. No details on the contents yet, but my gut tells me that 1 of those 4 discs is probably a soundtrack, but that's just a guess.

The Third Man has been beautifully restored in 4K for the first time, showcasing the genius of this celebrated British noir, voted the ‘The greatest British film of all time’ by a British Film Institute poll.
Holly Martins (Joseph Cotton, Citizen Kane ), a naïve writer of pulp westerns, arrives in Vienna to meet his old friend Harry Lime (the incomparable Orson Welles) nut finds that Lime has apparently been killed in a suspicious accident. Martins, too curious for his own good, hears contradictory stories about the circumstances of Lime's death and as witnesses disappear he finds himself chased by unknown assailants. Complicating matters are the sardonic Major Calloway (Trevor Howard, Brief Encounter), head of the British forces, and Lime’s stage actress mistress, Anna Schmidt (Alida Valli). Will Martin’s curiosity lead him to discover things about his old friend that he’d rather not know?
Brilliantly scripted by Graham Greene and set to Anton Karas’ evocative zither score, this justly celebrated classic is further enhanced by Robert Karasker’s Academy Award winning cinematography and Orson Welles in one of his most iconic screen roles.

Ugh. 2 DVDs? I'm fine w/ the CD, though I don't care for it.
Though... the transfer is the most important.

So missing some of the Criterion extras? The big question is the transfer then. I'm skeptical, but I want this to be good so as to avoid the big $ of the old Criterion disc .
I assume it'll come to the U.S. after the U.K., or is it an exclusive over there? I'm region free, but I'd rather get my own region if I can.

It'll probably be like their Wicker Man release. The UK version had way more extras and the soundtrack while the U.S. disc was whimpy in comparison. Still, I would pick up the domestic release if/when it happens.

If there are more extras, then I'll bite the bullet and get the UK disc. I can switch regions on my player if need be, it's just a pain .

Here's a comparison between the new 4k from the German release and the Criterion.
http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergl...mage=0#auswahl
Based on the screencaps, it looks like the grayscale is balanced a little better on the Studio Canal (Criterion has a tendency to up the contrast on older b/w films) and there's less sharpening. Without actually seeing the BD in person, this appears to be an upgrade over the Criterion, but probably not enough of one for me to double dip. For anyone who missed out on the Criterion, this looks like a no-brainer.

I was about to pull the trigger on the UK edition but apparently the disc isn't confirmed to be region free like its French counterpart. On the back of the French package it states that it's Region B, but that didn't seem to be the case but I hope it's confirmed soon so I can buy my Collector's Edition Set.

I rolled the dice and parted with my CC Blu-ray when this was announced. Just got shipping notice on this from Amazon.uk

Yeah I bought it too. Did you get the single disc or 4 disc version? There wasn't much of a price difference between the two and I wanted to get the soundtrack. I love the music!
