Universal Marx Brothers Comedies >> 6/7/2011 (?)

In a piece that just ran in the NY Times (here), it's claimed that Universal will be releasing all of its Marx Brothers comedies on Blu-Ray on June 7th:

Since Universal has not already officially announced these titles, and at least one of the other dates in the piece has changed since it was written (Criterion's Cul-de-Sac will not be out in July), it's possible the discs won't actually arrive on the 7th, but I imagine some level of fact-checking went into this piece, so expect to see them within the next few months.

I'll happily upgrade if they are released.

Ryan Gallagher of Criterion Cast has theorized that the NY Times meant that single-disc DVDs were being released on the 7th, which are listed on Universal's site. That'd be a pretty disappointing mistake, but maybe their error will show Universal the interest level on Blu-Ray releases.

I would expect Warner to release theirs first. They are the ones to frequently release classics on BD. I was surpised when the article said the Universal ones.

That's a damn shame.

Even though I know I'd buy them anyways just to get Marx Brothers on Blu, I have no true interest in the MGMs.

I'd LOVE to see the MGM titles on BD as well (Night at the Opera and A Day At The Races), but I'm hoping this is all true, as I am very close to biting on the UK DVD set....

Is that cheaper than the two US sets from Warner and Universal?

Same here. Universal has released nothing pre-60's on Blu-ray. I'm still waiting on that Birds announcement.

Horse Feathers is a mess... I can't believe they would release the version they have on BD... unless they finally found a better print.

I know where you're coming from, but other than the edits the existing film is clean and crisp. "Cocoanuts" is the real headache, some of it looks quite good while other parts look like a fifth-generation print that has been stored in gravel.
