It's frustrating that all their releases can't be like this.

I figured this would happen... oh well. There is not really any new extra's that interested me anyway.

Sounds great. I'll be digging into my review copy in the next week or so. Always a fan of hearing Burr speak. He's such an enthusiastic participant on supplements.

Did you purposely pick the bloodiest screenshots possible for From a Whisper to a Scream?

Ha! I left the most gruesome, dismemberment-y stuff out. I didn't snap a shot of the creature in one segment either. I tried really hard not to spoil anything.

Was there ever a version of The Hills Have Eyes that wasn't just a half-assed upscale?

Not that I'm aware of. Image Entertainment is to blame for that one.

Curses. No doubt that Shout couldn't get the right to it then if it's an Image title. I was hoping maybe it'd have showed up in another region somewhere.

I tried searching for that, but the stupid remake gums up the works. I know the German release is the same DNR-ed upscale as the U.S. Doesn't look like there's anything in the UK, France, or Australia.

Arrrg. Well, barring Image wanting to do a remaster, of which there is no chance at all, I'm guessing we'll be seeing it around the same time that we see an anamorphic version of the director's cut of The Abyss then.

re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

I've been wondering about the BD w/ Police story 1 & 2.

How bad is it? Like is it better looking than the DVDs we got from Dragon Dynasty? It's 80s HK, I'm used to ugly. I'm just wondering as a reference where it stands. The reviews I've seen haven't been very critical in terms of it's home video releases as basis of context for review.

I've been itching to watch those again and if THIS is the best the world has than... that's a lot better than before.

I think we're going to have to resign ourselves to the fact that Hong Kong cinema on video is never going to get any worthwhile treatment . Unless maybe Fortune Star and Celestial's death grips end, and that's so not happening.

I thought that was obvious over a decade ago. We are never getting reference editions for most of the films they control.

re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

The problem is that we're so used to crap looking HK flicks that we'll take mediocre if it's better than the previous one. To make it even worse, even if a US company takes charge of the property... somehow it's still not the standard for the format. Most of the time. Dubtitles, 1080i, poor subtitles, crap cuts used, etc.

I actually really dug the DVDs they had of the first 2 Police Story films from Dragon Dynasty.

All of the Fortune Star/Kam & Ronson Blu-Ray releases look like garbage right?

Is that inherent in the source or because both companies are putting out bad BDs?

re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

A little bit of both. More so on the latter now though.

HK, in the 1980s or even possibly still, never took care of their back log. They churned out movies like crazy and quickly put them away. With no proper care to store them. It just wasn't their film culture to do so.

In home video, somebody help me out here, it seems like they'll do a restoration but it's never really a good one. And some of these studios will only allow their restoration to be the ONE to give out. in SOME cases they'll let us do it but very rarely. It's a fucked up worked in HK w/ film care and restoration.

Well, maybe it'll happen after Fortune Star loses the rights. Oh, wait....

re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

Got the Mad Max BD about 20 minutes ago. I dig it. This is the second Shout product, I've ever gotten. The new feature w/ Mel and etc. doesn't add much. I'd swear I've already heard that info before. Probably the commentary. Anyway, I'm fine w/ double dipping on this one just cuz the cover is so ugly on the previous BD.

Would have been great if they got George Miller to do a commentary on this one. Alas...

re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

I've been wondering....Do any stores carry Scream discs? I went to both Best Buy & Barnes and Noble last weekend and found nothing. The last one that I saw (And bought) in stores was Halloween II (They also had III in stock) at Target. But that was two Octobers ago. If you say FYE that's understandable. I think the nearest store is about 200 miles away.

re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

Nosing around the store finder stuff for Best Buy, Target, Barnes and Noble, and Walmart:

All four retailers have Mad Max in-stock in seemingly all of their stores locations around here.
Best Buy and Target both carry The Babadook on Blu-ray. The local Walmarts have it on DVD only. No dice at Barnes and Noble, period.
No one has the Ghoulies double feature.
No one has From a Whisper to a Scream.
No one has Escape from New York.

Every big box retailer seems to have given up on catalog horror BDs. If it's not a bargain bin DVD, if it's not tying into something in theaters, or if it's not a shiny, new horror movie, they're probably not going to stock it.

The reversible cover was worth the double dip for me.
