Too many near "Challenge curse"-like events around here. I hope your back settled down and you enjoyed film one on your new throne Chad; that your healing continues Dick, and that your local drama stays away mightysparks.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 12th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/

I kicked off my Halloween season with the first day of Monster Mania getting to meet Robert Englund. Incredibly nice guy with a story for everything. After getting home I watched 2 movies before calling it a night - Gargoyles from 1972 which was okay... interesting idea, and I liked the creature designs but it was rather bland and uneventful. Then Food Of The Gods 2 from 1989 which was fantastic cheese about giant killer rats (no pun intended)

Now I'm going back to Monster Mania to see what kind of crap I can blow more money on and then it's back to watching movies when I get back. I hope everyone is enjoying their start!

Sweet! And darn, is Monster Mania here in Maryland? I probably should have gone. That sounds like more fun than the Criterion near all nighter I pulled.

Appreciate it, Trevor! At least I have an excuse to be lazy and watch movies. Except meds keep making me fall asleep. Nothing like watching half of the same movie twice in a row.

No. Not at all. She doesn't even understand my passion for watching movies and TV shows. She's content to watch whatever the programmers at the networks throw her way.

We had some drama as well. Halfway through my first film, the new BR of The Tower of London, my wife calls out to me that the fire department is at the door and we have a gas leak outside! A neighbor had smelled gas (he said he's been smelling it a couple of days - we never noticed but the garage is on the opposite side of the house) and called the gas company and fire department. The gas company man arrived within minutes and fixed the line. It wasn't long, about 45 minutes, but still slowed things down.

I suffer from "old timer's disease" and do that on a semi-regular basis *without* meds!

Oh yeah... a belated *Happy Birthday!*

A lot of times I sleep during the day, and early evening, and then am up most of the rest of the night. Maybe I'm a vampire.

Thanks, I hope so too

Anyway, today I managed to get through all the movies I'd planned to; Return of the Blind Dead, Silent Night, Zombie Night, Virus, Burying the Ex and Dead Before Dawn.

Silent Night, Zombie Night started out quite well but had a lot of pacing issues. It felt quite genuine so was easily likable despite the low budget. Burying the Ex was kind of stupid and seemed tonally off, but I found it oddly charming and enjoyable anyway.

I don't see why that has to extend to the optional things as well. They are supposed to be difficult to accomplish!

Watching one Looney Tunes short (many would qualify for various themes this year) seems like a bit of a cheat and significantly dilutes the challenge aspect of it.
I presume Trevor was advocating for an additional one-off (or two-off) wildcard option to comply with Theme Nights on otherwise-packed days by watching a themed short.

Optional and Challenging is great, and Chad clarifying that there are a couple of options to 'make up' for missed days is a big help, but one more possibility still allows nearly 90% FULL compliance, and 10% 'in the spirit' wildcard pseudo-compliance.

Last-ditch options to encourage Not Giving Up after a difficult day.

I try to collect all holiday horror films, but haven't found that one yet. Will have to search harder, as it doesn't appear to be easily streaming.

Quite enjoyed Burying the Ex iirc. May have to watch it again in honor of Anton Yelchin.

That's surely a given - and shadokitty already mentioned being given that rule last year - but a) a hazier query would be "what if someone watches a full-film's-worth of shorts, but only x/y of them are Theme compliant, and b) that defeats the (limited time) nature of the query: if someone has time to watch a dozen shorts, they could watch a film...

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 12th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/

Kuroneko (1968)

Kaneto Shindo's atmospheric film starts off with a group of samurai raping and murdering a mother and wife and setting their home on fire. They burst into the modest hovel and trash the place, scavenging for food like uninhibited animals. A black cat licks the wounds of the victims who become vengeful spirits, preying on unwitting samurai, luring them in with the promise of shelter and sake, before seducing and ultimately killing them. The first act of the film is haunting and satisfying, but things get complicated when Gintoki gets hired to destroy the monsters wiping out local Samurai. Gintoki recognizes the specters as his wife and mother, and struggles to discover if they are demons trying to get inside his head, or really his family.

The film is visually stunning, full of memorable shots of Samurai and female spirits gliding through foggy bamboo forests. Shindo subverts the heroic template of Samurai warriors, and portrays them as opportunistic predators, victimizing peasants and taking whatever they want. Gintoki finds glory and success in war, but he is then used as a tool by the very culture that destroyed his wife, mother, and home. He's caught between the illusion of the past and the reality of the present, as he spends a few romantic evenings with his wife's spirit. This is probably the third time I've seen the movie, and I appreciate its depth more every time I see it.

Corridors of Blood (1959)

Boris Karloff stars as a sensitive, aging surgeon who is desperate to unlock the secret of as of yet undiscovered anesthesia. His peers dismiss his experiments as folly, convinced that with the knife, comes pain. A failed demonstration leaves him disgraced and he spirals down the path of addiction as his experiments grow more and more dangerous. He enlists the help of graverobbers who are creating their own corpses to get paid.

Karloff's performance is the big highlight here. I always forget that he's more than a groaning, shuffling monster from the Frankenstein films. This is an interesting story about an aspect of modern medicine we take for granted. Christopher Lee also appears, but fans of his may find him underutilized as a mostly quiet, but menacing thug. The film comes screeching to a halt when the doctor's son and his love interest are on screen, sucking the life out of the movie with their completely unnecessary subplot. Luckily that doesn't happen to often and the film mostly stays focused on Karloff's descent into desperation.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 12th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/

I watched Frozen Scream and Raising Cain last night and managed to post my image working everything I watch for the challenge into the room of a daycare. I don't plan on doing 100 so it won't be too crowded by the end.

It'll probably be a lot harder to work other movies in a way that seems somewhat natural. Zombies might stand out some.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 12th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/

Every year I kick off with Ed Wood's Orgy of the Dead. I'm going to be watching a lot of movies in blocks - for example, I have a Tor Johnson 5-movie run of The Black Sleep, The Unearthly, Bride of the Monster, Night of the Ghouls and The Beast of Yucca Flats. I should probably put Yucca in the middle there so I don't leave Tor feeling crummy. What a terrible film. Only good thing about it is the quick boob flash about a minute in.

Watched Tenebre last night....had been long enough that I thought I had forgotten the killer. Got halfway in, popped into my head. Oh well, not my favorite Argento, but still a good movie!

Wanted to do a FTV tonight but when The Beyond fits a theme night....I think I kind of have to go with it. Or maybe City of the Living Dead..or maybe Zombie...did I mention Fulci rules?

Quite enjoyed Burying the Ex iirc. May have to watch it again in honor of Anton Yelchin.
Really good film and a lot of fun. Watch that, Odd Thomas and Fright Night to remember Anton. Damn amazing talented actor.

For the Joe Bob Briggs commentary, would his Monstervision show count?

Nice video Darkgod! I often toy with the idea of someday doing a blog or podcast or video diary of my viewing and reading, but I doubt it'll happen anytime soon. But I'm glad that you and others do them. It's nice to not only get your thoughts, but to put a face to the name.

Oh, he was in the Fright Night remake or sequel? Cool, those are in my viewing piles.
