Finished up the Film Festival yesterday, being able to add 2 more movies to my list!
One was a Giallo from Belgium called The Strange Color of Your Body's Tears. It was completely incomprehensible! I can't even tell you whether the story resolved or not. It was like watching a 90 minute acid trip.
The other was another Japanese splatterfest called Why Don't You Play In Hell from Shion Shono. I guess he's important to the industry. I don't know. I don't watch these movies most of the time. It really was a bloody mess. Heads flying off, limbs all over the place, inches of blood on the floor. I think it was somewhat meant to be a comedy, it was so over the top.
Anyway, awesome film festival! I'm so glad I was able to count some of it toward this month's challenge. I also got to see El Topo and The Holy Mountain for the first time and on the big screen, which is great! It was screened in 35mm even.
I was able to count 7 from the 19 films I saw this week. You can see all the films I saw at the festival at the bottom of my list in a big image of posters. Hover over them to see the names of the movies.
Now back to trying to deplete the unwatched pile! I've also got a crap load (literally) of stuff that recorded off TCM over the first part of this month. Can we expand this challenge into May?!

Awesome! just got tickets to Reefer Madness at 11pm on Saturday night at a theater here! Must have something to do with it being the night before 4/20, I guess. Then I have Black Sabbath tickets for the 20th! And my brother will be here. Going to be a great weekend!

I was disappointed to find out (after the fact) that Turner Classic Movies showed Disco Godfather yesterday morning. That sounded like it would have been a good one for the challenge! However, I also found out that on April 21 that they'd be showing eight AIP Beach Party movies, so if you're looking for a cheap way to clear that off your list (and you already have the TCM channel), there you go!

Just got a great 4 feature DVD pack in the mail today. Should fill a lot of slots on the checklist! Here's how it is described on Amazon...
Savage Island (1985): Women who have been captured and sold as slave labor to a South American emerald mine hatch a plan for revolution and revenge.
The Naked Cage (1986): A young woman is falsely convicted of a bank robbery and sent to a maximum-security prison run by a corrupt warden, where she is forced to suffer various indignities.
Chatterbox (1977): A young woman who works in a beauty parlor discovers that her vagina can talk, which causes her no end of trouble.
Angels from Hell (1968): A destructive ex-motorcycle gang leader comes home from Vietnam to resume his life and his desire to form a powerful gang has the police running scared.

Didn't have the chance to make it to the post office today, but when I checked the tracking, my Three Stooges movie set has been delivered. That's the problem with PO Boxes, you can't check them every day.

I remember seeing the trailer for SAVAGE ISLAND at a 42nd Street theater and it was pretty obvious from the trailer that Linda Blair was only in the framing footage and not in a second of the Italian-made women-in-island-prison footage that made up the bulk of the film. The distributor clearly wanted audiences to think it was a sequel to SAVAGE STREETS, Blair's film from a year earlier.

I guess I won't set my heart on seeing Linda Blair naked then...

Any recommendations for some good Brucesploitation flicks? The few I've caught were pretty ho-hum.
Yeah, it was surprisingly sweet for a movie about a talking vagina and based on a French porno. And probably holds the record for most visible boom mics per scene.

I watched my William Castle set over the weekend. It was quite fun and there were a couple I'd never seen before.
After that I watched a Dick Tracy 4 film set I'd picked up some time back and didn't have time for in the AACM Challenge. As it turns out I'd only seen 2 of those before and one of those I'd not seen, Dick Tracy vs. Queball, is the best one in the series.
Today I received a order from Hamilton Books which has several qualifying titles... I'd not actually thought about these qualifying when I placed the order so it was a nice surprise when I opened the package and realized they would!
The Beast Collection - which has the titles:
Zontar: Thing from Venus
The Eye Creatures
Majin, Monster of Terror
Return of the Giant Majin
The Capture of Bigfoot
Shriek of the Mutilated
Search for the Beast
The Legend of Bigfoot
Sasquatch, the Legend of Bigfoot
Snow Beast
The Snow Creature (supposedly SF's first film Yeti)
Old Mother Riley - British Cinema Collection - with:
Old Mother Riley in Paris
Old Mother Riley M.P.
Old Mother Riley's New Venture
Old Mother Riley Headmistress
Old Mother Riley's Jungle Treasurer
Mother Riley Meets the Vampire (the title I purchased the set to get - costars Bela Lugosi)
and finally:
Supersonic Man
War of the Robots
But first is: Snow White and The Three Stooges, one I picked up a couple of months back. It also has Soup to Nuts in a 2 pack. I may watch Soup to Nuts next and start the others tomorrow.

Just finished Contamination (1980), an Italian Alien rip-off, that, eggs and exploding chests not-withstanding, has more in common with Zontar: The Thing From Venus. Saw the trailer in my Drive-in Delirium - The Off-Spring set, the first disc in the We Are Going To Eat You section (mostly cannibal/zombie movies).Would have been a better fit the creature feature section, I think. Still, the trailer piqued my interest, and here we are. Blue Underground did a great job with the movie, it looked great.

Speaking of the trailers on that disc, you'll notice that there's something there called "Hillbilly Hooker". And I just so happened to have watched that movie earlier! On Troma's youtube page, it's listed under "Demented Death Farm Massacre". I just assumed that it was a Fred Olen Ray film before I clicked on it (The description says so) But as I was watching the film, I noticed that it looked real familiar (It's got that burly Hillbilly guy "Spying" on hot chicks) I can't say that the movie was a worth a look, but at least I've now seen "The Hillbilly Hooker"! And as you might expect, the trailer's VO has absolutely nothing to do with the actual movie

Started today with a really over the top first time view, Sharknado. It was a recommended watch on my Netflix list, so I thought I'd check it out. It was decent, but as I said, almost comedic in how over the top it was. And I hear there is actually a sequel in the works, set in New York this time. I still have the ending credits song stuck in my head. We're all gonna die in a sharknado. lol.

Re: Fifth Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge April 1-30 2014
I was actually thinking of getting that "Beast" collection (Mostly for the Majin movies) but I settled for a cheapie Gamera collection instead (Might arrive by next monday) It would've been more convenient if I ordered that earlier so I wouldn't have to quickly rush through that set before this challenge ends. We'll see how far I can get when my annual "Whole-Week-Off" comes around.
I hem-hawed about picking up a copy until it went OOP and Amazon prices started creeping up. I found Hamilton Books had it for ~$12 so put it in with some other OOP titles Hamilton had at prices far better than Amazon. Looks like it was just in time 'cause I can't find it on their site any more.
I primarily purchased it for Zontar because it seemed every time I'd pick up some PD set that supposedly had the title it would be missing. Yeah... I'm a sucker for bad "B" SF titles but John Agar is in this one and I like his work. The Majin and "Bigfoot" films were mainly lanyap.
So... last night I watched Snow White and The Three Stooges and followed it up with Soup to Nuts.
Snow White... was pretty much what I'd remembered... The Three Stooges shoehorned into the Snow White story. They felt mostly out of place and totally superfluous to the story. I was also annoyed/distracted at the voice of the dummy being Mel Blanc. While I really like his work in the Looney Tunes it just doesn't sound right when his voice is used in other projects. I *did* enjoy the skating segments and really like how they used a thin layer of water to hide the skate marks on the ice. But there was a section when "Snow White" wound up fallen on the ice and I could only think how *cold* it must have been to hit that water barrier on the ice and then have to lay there a bit. I enjoyed the film but felt it could have been better without the Stooges (yeah... sacrilege, eh?).
Soup to Nuts wasn't too bad. In spite of being a huge fan of the Stooges I'd never seen this film before. It is a fairly typical musical/comedy/variety film of its era (1930), but it *was* interesting seeing the Stooges before they broke away from Ted Healy's shadow. I really enjoyed the a cappella songs they performed and their relatively brief screen time. It also looked as if Shemp were the "leader" of the group at this point in time. He had more lines and pretty much initiated the slaps/poking/hitting against the other two. At times I felt that Healy almost resented them being on the screen with him but they *were* the true high points of the film.

^Yup, just got done re-watching it and (I hear an echo) she was in it more than I remembered too. But it's too bad that the "Minnie" scene was drastically cut down. If you check out the trailer, Minnie actually had some lines. None of which made it into the movie. I would've liked to have seen how that whole conversation went (Even the sex was cut down!)

Glad to see so many people having a good time and watching some great movies! I've slumped off really bad the last week and a half. My backlog of review discs has me swamped and while many of them fit the challenge I havent had a ton of time to watch other stuff. I will update my list soon and hopefully get back in the swing of the challenge with a couple weeks left.

I've really fallen behind on my comments. Last weekend, I watched a couple of "Ma & Pa Kettle" films: Ma and Pa Kettle at Home and Ma and Pa Kettle at Waikiki. They were the last ones that featured Percy Kilbride as Pa Kettle. These adhered to the two basic plots: the Kettles stay home and deal with a catastrophe and the Kettles go on vacation and get caught up in a crime. In both cases, there is always an older Kettle child who either wants to go to college or wants to marry someone (or both). They are silly movies, but I enjoy them.
Next, I watched Zapped!, a film whose cover I remember being intrigued by as a adolescent. Unfortunately, it is a fairly tame and uninteresting affair. Another Gay Movie was definitely crasser and more exploitative, making sure to rip the clothes off the main characters as often as possible. The film is an homage/parody of American Pie-esque comedies, and made me laugh quite a bit. The main character's mother is played by a drag queen and supplied two of my favorite moments. First, she picks up a wire hanger and twists her face into rage as Psycho music plays. Later, her son finds a note she's left for him scrawled on one of her glamour shots and signed "Mommie Dearest." Both are fabulous moments!
Probably the best film I've watched recently was Rock 'n' Roll High School which was infectiously fun. Unfortunately, The Ramones couldn't act wet in a rainstorm, but the film thankfully sidelines them quickly and effectively. Mary Woronov is awesome as the militant principal (though it may be that I just like no-nonsense women with high cheekbones).

But yes, the lighthearted rape song was definitely a bizarre moment. Hard to grasp quite how far the tongue was in the cheek on that one, and whether it was a multi-level satire, or just a slightly unwise attempt at levity.
