Hobo is available on Pay Per View on Time Warner.

Luckily, my sick doesn't involve intestines. Just a head cold.

Re: Second Annual Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge March 31-April 30 2011

Thanks for the kind wishes, everybody. And I hope everyone else afflicted heals sooner rather than later. This is one of the disadvantages of getting old--ailments come and go, usually without warning. (Are there any advantages to getting old? Well, I have a lot of stories to tell, but that's about it.) Right now, I've got a case of shingles and none of the three doctors I've seen have been able to prescribe anything that works to ease the pain. I had some old percocet that I used over the weekend, along with ibuprofen, and that seemed to work, but I'm running out of those. I got new percocet yesterday, and the latest doctor urged me not to use ibuprofen because of my high blood pressure, but when I took one of the new percocet today, it made me nauseous.

I had hoped that with the time off, I'd get more viewing in, but I've only been able to manage three a day. Today, I managed to finish MST3K: PRINCE OF SPACE, but then dozed off from the percocet for most of the afternoon. I'll try to pick up with Sonny Chiba now to do at least one more before going to sleep.

Still, I've done 17 so far, which isn't bad. I've included short reviews with my entries on the list thread. My post is the second one down on page 2.

is this 50-pack still necessary?

Even though I'm not the biggest fan of Crown International stuff, those smaller BCI/Mill Creek sets still beats out this box.

The best highlights of the Drive-In set:
Invasion of the Bee Girls
Country Blue
Phenomena
(Ugly transfer though)
Spare Parts
T.N.T. Jackson
Don't Open Til Christmas

These versions are cut:
Slave of the Cannibal God
Rituals
Tenebre

Paul Naschy movies are listed, but they're not included (At least not in my copy)

If you stay in decent shape, you find you can attract younger members of the opposite sex that don't mind someone a little older. Though at a certain point, life exchanges that benefit and gives you senior discounts instead.

If you go to amazon, someone will have listed all the movies in the set. Then you can compare with what you have. Another thing to consider, sometimes the movies in the packs change. I have some of the original ones that have had the movies changed.

It's even better if you watch it dubbed and with subtitles on. They don't match each other, in an amusing way.

I'll have to try that sometime.

The transfer/subs on the Tokyo Shock disc are pretty awful. I need to eventually upgrade to the Joy Sales Anamorphic R3 disc in the future.

Well, I watched Julien Donkey-Boy tonight and have to say I don't know what the hell that was all about. But, the odd thing is I still found it entertaining.

Ichi the Killer must set some kind of B-Movie/Exploitation record. 2 Minutes and 31 seconds in and weird/crazy shit already goes down.

As much as I wanted to get to near 100 this Challenge, I think I'll be happy if I break 50.

I think once you get to doing a few of these, especially if you're doing more than just one a year, hitting 100 seems more like a chore. I'm just taking my time and enjoying things instead of a mad rush.

Lately, I've been lucky if I hit one or two movies a day, so I doubt I'll be hitting 100. BTW, when Arnold did The Running Man, was he already famous or would that be a Before They Were Famous?

He was a reliably bankable box office draw following The Terminator, which I would use as the line of demarcation for Schwarzenegger movies. For anything post-Terminator, I would use a wild card.

I would personally use a wild card. Ji-Woon Kim works in genre, but I wouldn't necessarily call his movies B-movies.

Question about "X" Rated films... A lot of X Rated films were reclassified as R Rated without edits or later released as unrated. This is probably a little nit-picky but could would one of these count as an X-Rated film based on its initial rating? ex. Last House on the Left or Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3

Took advantage of the challenge to finally watch The Stalking Moon, a Gregory Peck suspense-Western from 1968. Didn't change my life, but it was a little different and worth watching. Eva Marie Saint looked a little old for her role.

I'm going to say no and here's my reason why. We have a separate category for Unrated films that were threatened with an X but went out Unrated. You can use films that just didn't bother to get a rating, but it's intended for films that are unrated that would otherwise have been X or NC17. Since this is an exploitation challenge, the "X" is a specific category. "X" was not trademarked by the MPAA. Exploitation filmmakers exploited the rating to get an audience. If you intend to complete the checklist, we do have 10 free spots so it can be skipped. But the X category is for films that were proudly exhibited with that rating. This often means porn, but 70s porn wasn't like 80s and beyond porn. They made an effort to tell a story with some explicit sex (or gore, Andy Warhol's Frankenstein went out with an X). I'd like to keep the category honest.

Re: Second Annual Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge March 31-April 30 2011

As for Arnold, I agree. Terminator was the demarcation line (for him and Cameron, too). Not long after that, he was the first of the $20M club. That defines A-List. But he was in a Hercules movie that counts. He was in Stay Hungry with Jeff Bridges and Sally Field before he was famous, but that's not really a drive-in flick. I really don't know if Pumping Iron would count. It's not really about an exploitation subject. Convince me.

I met him twice as a kid when he was touring Pumping Iron. He has friends in Columbus (hence the Arnold Classic being here) and was here at a theater signing autographs and at a car show (or was it a mall, I can't remember). My folks went to see Pumping Iron and I went to see Freaky Friday. I came out and there's freaking Arnold. I was familiar with him back then because my dad was a weight lifter and subscribed to the muscle mags.

Re: Second Annual Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge March 31-April 30 2011

Well, I seem to be keeping on pace for 100. I'll lose it when I go to my convention the third week. I'm surprised most are keeping about the same pace of around 26 or so films so far. A couple newcomers are hitting Trevor-esque numbers. Love seeing the newcomers.

I still love this challenge. As much as I love Horror (and I love Horror), I start to get skeevy when I get close to 100. So much depravity and morbidity wears on you after a while. I love that I can pop in something funny or funky or sexy and still enjoy a good old bloodbath. The ones that don't participate don't know what they are missing. These films may be trash, but they are genuinely entertaining.

Mondo Cane 2. Holy shit is this the most depressing movie I've ever seen. The scene with the little African children turned into beggar freaks, right out of Victor Hugo.

Re: Second Annual Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge March 31-April 30 2011

I know I'm not going to make 100, but given my time limitations, I'm plugging along nicely. Perhaps, with luck, I may see the low seventies. Fifties is probably more realistic.

Still, I'm watching a nice breadth of movies (still heavy on the sci-fi/horror, though), and a lot of them stuff I haven't seen or haven't watched in decades.
