By the time I got into DVD collecting, most of the now-valuable criterion discs were already OOP and had only been out perhaps a year or two. I would love to see the special features on some of these discs like This is Spinal Tap or hear some of their audio commentaries (esp. the two on the Tap disc) without laying out $100-200 per disc. I realize this may be unlikely but is there any place that rents these discs (perhaps by securing a deposit or something)?

I would imagine people would say they "lost" them and then pay the rental place back the MSRP. I've seen Robocop at several Hollywood Videos.

I'm not sure where your located, but if you happen to be in the Seattle area, Scarecrow video has a bunch of them available for rent. The really rare ones (Salo, The Killer, etc) require a very sizeable deposit in some cases though. I think it takes a $1000 deposit to rent Salo.

I Don't know where you live but here in, Toronto, there's a place called "Bay Street Video" That Rents the entire collection. I think the deposit for Salo is $600 or $750.

hollywood video near me has This is Spinal Tap, RoboCop, Dead Ringers, hardboiled, and The Killer. It never occured to me to rent and just pay the msrp, but I have all the oops but salo from CC anyway. check you hwv, it may have them...

Public libraries are a great hidden resource. My local one has everything from "Carnival of Souls" to "Diary of a Country Priest." If they don't have what you want, try requesting that they purchase it for their circulation.

Does anyone rent these if they have to trust that much money to the store? Besides, who even carries that type of money with them. I sure never take $1K to a video store with me.

Our library has an extensive Criterion collection - as well as a growing set of other great DVDs. And if by chance they don't have a particular title, I can request it from another library via a local library network. Cool stuff.

My local video store has Robocop and Silence of the Lambs. I'm sure there are others as well, I just haven't checked.

It depends upon your local public library.The one I work at does not believe in buying feature films. They buy stuff like the Russian propaganda films about Nazi Germany. No I am not kidding. Some of the selections are even worse. Also it is a black neighborhood so their is no demand for this type of material. The boss does the selection too.

I've checked my local Hollywood Video. I remember they used to have Robocop and Silence of the Lambs, but both of these are now MIA. When I asked about it, the clerk predictably didn't know much. I've also checked my local public library, but nada. I guess I will have to continue checking.

The Hollywood Video on North Burnside in Portland, OR, has a glass case at the front counter full of all the out-of-print DVDs they have, Criterion or no. This includes Salo. They do, however, require a large deposit, and the deposit is based on how valuable the disc is. Salo is $600. They said one guy rented it just to see what the fuss was.
