Is that really what happened? That sucks. But I gotta say, I'd believe it. I visit the forum there almost as often as here, and I hate to offend anyone, but a lot of the regulars(hell most of the moderators) there are snobish and very brutal on those trying to learn. I won't say I haven't been honest about a hideous cover, but I never went as far as insulting another user and telling them where to go, which seems to happen quite frequently over there.

Shame they had to ruin it for everyone though. I wouldn't doubt if it was someone (rippah or matthieu) from DF ratting them out either.

Oh, for the good old days when people put up a cover and we downloaded and thanked them. Making requests and suggestions.
We were a friendly and good community. I was patiently instructed on how to download, print and make some of my own covers. I never received a insulting or harsh word. We just got too big and went commercial.
To Michael, Matt, DarthVong, John and all the others that gave me instructions, created covers for me that I requested and the friendly good times - THANK YOU!!!

Are you referring to DVDCA or DVD Talk?

Both actually. It all started with our Talented Artists on DVDTALK (as you well know) and then Matt expanded and later DVDCA evolved because of the problem with bandwidth. Once the DVDCA got going and became so big with so many contributors, it was almost inevitible that problems would occur. I am not critisizing anyone on either site, I am just lamenting the "good old days" of when the cover artists were offfering their covers o their own sites, and the whole process was less impersonal.

I feel you. Well, quoth Cyndi Lauper -- "Money Changes Everything"...

Perhaps there'll be a migration of artists back to DVD Talk?

Well, I'm back. They won't even let me post a preview pic of my Disney covers in the forum. Even if the cover won't be available for d/l. Posted one the other day, and my post got edited and the pic removed.

BTW, Home on the Range and Aladdin are both 99% done. I just need features.

Bambi is about 80% done. The poster I'm using requires a lot of help, so I have been procrastinating on it. Same for Cinderella.

I will post images later.

Guess I'll be posting here more frequently too ... the whole Disney thing made me leave the site (edit: DVDCA that is) alltogether.

Michael, maybe I've got the art you want to use for Cinderella / Bambi at high res ?
Just mail me if you want me to have a look in my "archives".

PS. Did you receive that latest mail I sent you Michael ? (asking because ISP is having mail server problems again :-@)

I never understood why people don't just host images on a peer to peer file share...like bit torrent or something. It would eliminate the bandwidth issues.

I wonder how it would eliminate the bandwith issues ?

The writing was on the wall once Lucasfilm dropped the hammer. I suspected that eventually other companies would follow suit. I think we were fine when DVDCA was below the radar, but it just got to big and was easily noticed.

As far as the whole making-money issue. There's no other way to host a site with that much bandwidth usage for free. Sure there are alternatives, but nothing as stable as a website vs. peer-peer.

It was fun while it lasted. I'll miss seeing the numerous submissions by lesser known artist who contributed.

Hi all,

I have been with DVDCA for several years, and it has grown to be a major
part of my DVD hobby. I despise snappers, digipacks, and just plain
butt-ugly studio produced coverart (Real Genius, anyone?), and the
incredible covers produced by Matt, DarthVong, Publis82, and too many others
to name have given my library a great makeover. I have never uploaded a
cover, as I have neither the tools nor the talent to contribute in that
way,but I am only too happy to help defray the cost of providing these
services via the credit system Matt came up with. That way everyone shares
in the enjoyment of our favorite source of debt....:-). As was stated
earlier in this thread, the studios are really shooting themselves in the
foot. The packaging of the DVD can (and often does) influence whether or
not I will buy. I avoid digipacks like the plauge, and snappers are not far
behind. If I can print out custom artwork to replace either, then I am much
more likely to take the bait.

I would like to add my voice to those suggesting an "underground" network of
sorts (maybe a password protected private site?), under the radar of the
MPAA. This does have its own set of problems, however. If someone did rat
DVDCA out, I would love nothing more than to hang him/her up by their
toenails. Thing is, how do the powers that be (Matt & co I mean) know that
I am not just as immature, spiteful, and egocentric? Whom does DVDCA trust
with access to the site? Do they require extensive background checks? I
suppose they could get some contractor to do the checks, but the DVDCA
credit fee might go up just a tad bit.....:-).

I agree in that this has *nothing* to do with potential piracy (another can
of worms entirely), but everything to do with the MPAAs paranoia and
heavy-handed legal positioning.

I cannot state strongly enough how much I appriciate the efforts by so many
talented artists at DVDCA, and feel this to be a huge blow to a community I
have come to view as part of my extended family. I am sure that the DVD
cover art community will continue to evolve, and I will be there right along
with it.

I'm glad I not only down-loaded DVD's I own but those I intend to own. Close to 300 (have about 30 credits left). Anyone working on the X-Files bonus disc that appears in most of the seasons?

I think I have about 70 creds left... hope I get to use 'em!

Gotta agree with DV though... it was only a matter of time. It's just too bad that some yahoo decided that he needed to ruin it for everyone.

PS - Pagansoul, I *love* that B5 quote. One of the best lines ever.

My favorite one is:

Corwin: "So from now on I guess the operational phrase is, Trust no one."
Ivanova: "No! Trust Ivanova. Trust yourself. Anybody else .... shoot 'em!"

But then again there's tons of Ivanova quotes I find hilarious ...

Hopefully everything works out. I have been a (non-cover making) member of dvdca since matt was located at Reality Crash (that seems like decades ago) and watched the site evolve from a little page matt put up to the "mega-lo dvdca" we have/had today. I know the "new" site allowed for hundreds of new artist and an abundance of choices but I belive it all just got to "mainstream" I remember reading on a JoBlo.com about who "cool" dvdca was and thought then that the MPAA would swoop in but it was months before the "first shot" was fired by Lucass. I have to agree with the other members, the small intimate friendly old dvdcoverart ,where one could request and critique others covers in the forums and not get "Modded" to death, was the best of time. We might not have had as many artist, but we had the "Greats" Hopefully dvdca survives this, if not I guess it's back to converts of snappers/digi-paks and the few customs that the great artist of DVDTalk continue to churn out.

I hope everything works out as well, and I caught the thread over at DVDCA about the user who notified the MPAA about the site. That is really messed up thing to do regardless of how you are treated, and it seems downright childish.

That said, I did have an idea about what can be done in the scenario that a central website cannot be achieved.

Maybe a forum (outside of here and DVDCA) can be set up and can work out a trading system, and make up a list of good traders and bad, artist's work with threads, etc.

Thanks for the love guys. Let me get the last two done and I will see what I can do. Mailing cd's is pretty cheap. Maybe I can just send out a bunch at my own cost every once in a while. Still debating though.

Dont get caught Mike - hate to be a killjoy but be careful - should you happen to send the "wrong thing" to the "wrong person" by mail, thats all anyone would need to make a federal case out of it.

Free or not - simply the fact that is was transported by Federal US mail by a Federal US employee using Federal US resources ... i think you get the picture - again - not trying to be a killjoy, but just trying to keep an eye out for ya

Do I think theres a chance in hell anything like this could happen? highly doubtful - but just how well do you know ANYONE in ANY of these forums? I do trust a few people and some freinds I have made - but anyone who just happens to appear on the scene saying "Hey I love your stuff, can you include me as well?"

Hell NO
