Re: "Dead Snow" Reviews/Discussion - 2010 Horror Challenge: Day 5

I passed on this a couple of times because the poster gave the movie a Shaun of the Dead feel. I love Shaun but didn't care at the times to watch comedy. Turned out to be more like Dog Soldiers with the humor secondary.

Loved the movie references to Friday the 13th, Evil Dead 1/2, April Fools Day (which is 1986 not 1984), Temple of Doom, Terminator, and Batman and Robin. Didn't get the Twister game made famous by Hollywood reference. Maybe had to do with one of the 60s beach movies or something. It also had The Descent accidental "axing" of a friend, and finished with a Raimi/Jackson over the top gore fest. Kinda had a The Fog spirit/gold relationship connection.

Sounds like I'm saying it doesn't have any originality, but it has it's own story to tell in it's own way. Best scene ever of a guy losing his mind (ha ha). Also had the great intestinal life line over the cliff. Can also be used for one of the two foriegn language films.

Recommended.

I'll give it a "recommended" as well. Didn't really click with me until about half way in, but then I felt like it found the right level of campiness and gore and kept me entertained for the remainder. I streamed it, but I think I'll end up keeping the BD that I just bought yesterday at Best Buy for $10.

Agreed. It became a fun ride from there on.

But gosh, that love-in-the-outhouse scene was the most stomach-turning moment I've encountered yet. The dude just farted and wiped his ass just seconds earlier.

Re: "Dead Snow" Reviews/Discussion - 2010 Horror Challenge: Day 5

One of my 'lil gripes about modern horror movies of this sort (young people find cabin in the woods and await the gory inevitable) is that you'd think the protagonists would have, like the films audience, have grown up watching horror movies and, thus, would know when to get the fuck out of Dodge and what NOT to do. Okay, granted, this might be a bit to ask of the modern horror screenwriter but THIS film actually HAD a character that had watched a bevy of horror films and still didn't know what to do. Dead Snow is a slow starter but when it kicks into a high gear of gore it becomes exactly what I wanted it to be: a campy Nazi zombie movie with buckets of sludge in the snow. Bring on the Reich of the Living Dead! But, with all the entrails and brains and limbs and crimson mess permeating the last hour of the film, Dead Snow blows its load (Ummm...pun intended) early by showing viewers something far more grotesque then anything the zombies dished out. I'd do love in an elevator but I'd never, EVER do love in an outhouse! This has to be one of the more disturbing horror film sex scenes in recent memory (Note RECENT memory because I don't think anything will top Basket Case). Seriously, what is it with Germans and scat!? For any hot blooded online porn lover, the Germans have just become synonymous with excrement and intercourse. It's as though some cruel mind thought to attempt to rival such German atrocities of the past by unleashing scat onto a feeble race of masturbators who, in the heat of a mouse click, can't defend themselves. That's just cruel, folks. At one point in the film a human bites a zombie. Of all the zombie flicks I've seen I don't recall that ever happening before and it gave me pause. If a human bites a zombie can: a) said human still become infected with zombotitus or b) somehow reverse the affects of zombisim and infect the zombie and make it human once again? Might make for an interesting change of pace to have humans chasing zombies in the wasteland of the dead in an effort to cure them. Again, Hollywood, I'm available. The makers of Dead Snow must be fans of the genre as their are classic horror film references peppered throughout the flick (not to mention Die Hard and Terminator nods, as well). Like in The Thing, I like the contrast of grotesqueness on white and kudos to the cast here who must have suffered so many a chilly production day. I just hope there isn't a special edition in our future with a newly extended outhouse scene.

And the finger she sucked, was it from the hand that had just wiped? I almost threw up.

Re: "Dead Snow" Reviews/Discussion - 2010 Horror Challenge: Day 5

I pretty much agree with what everyone has said. It was a little slow to get started, but once it kicked in, it was just a lot of fun. I liked this much better than Shaun of the Dead. I watched that during last years challenge and was disappointed by it. I think maybe I'd heard so many positive comments about it, my expectations were a little too high. But, I'd heard very little about Dead Snow and absolutely loved it!!!

It wouldn't be a horror movie if the characters didn't do something stupid as they are awaiting their fate. If you had a shotgun or a chainsaw as a weapon, which would you use first? When Martin and Roy squared off against the zombies near the end, Martin had a shotgun on his back; however, he used the chainsaw first. Personally, I don't want to get up close to a zombie until I have to.

Anyway, I would recommend this to anyone who likes zombie movies. One of the better ones to come along recently.

I agree with just about everyone here except while fun I don't think it's anywhere near the league of Shaun of the Dead.

Re: "Dead Snow" Reviews/Discussion - 2010 Horror Challenge: Day 5

...44 minutes in (half way) and still not one solid Nazi Zombie... come on, for a film that rubs your face in nazi zombies on the posters and cover art it's a big tease. Sure the slasher vibe to it is fun, but they need to make up their mind (stealth killer or zombies*).

Edit: First nazi zombie sighting at 45:44; things seem to be picking up... but wait, still no solid nazi zombies until 54:12.

The ending really is great, a lot of humor and intense action tension, I just wish it didn't take so long getting there. It seems like a total change of pace from everything that came before. If the film could have gotten that pace earlier it would have been a horror classic.

*True you could say Jason was a "zombie" but after so many films the franchise had clout enough to pull it off (since you knew what to expect) plus they didn't pull the zombie card to sell the film.

Re: "Dead Snow" Reviews/Discussion - 2010 Horror Challenge: Day 5

Just got finished watching this and loved it. I have seen it in the streaming section for some time but always passed on it due to the cover art. It just looked cheap and stupid. The movie kinda reminded me of From Beyond which I had just watched the other night. Once it gets going, it gets crazy and doesn't let up, even more so in this movie. So many awesomely outrageous scenes that I have trouble naming my favorite. I laughed as much as cringed which is a good thing.

It also reminded me of House Of The Dead which is also a guilty pleasure of mine. Normal people going from zero to kick-ass in 2.2 seconds. At least the laughs in this movie were meant to be intentional though.

The line "We should have gone to the beach like I told you!" right after watching his buddy's head get ripped apart and the brains fall on the floor cracked me up. "Fucking Nokia!" "Where the fuck did you find a machine gun?" So many great lines.

And all the references to other horror movies was great and didn't feel like they were ripping them off. And I thought there were actually showing the dude cut off his arm as a horrific part because he didn't have to. No one was shown becoming a zombie after they had been killed or bitten. The only zombies were the Nazi zombies. The dummy had been listening to his friend who watches too many movies and cut his own arm off without even knowing if being bitten would actually harm him. Maybe I am misinterpreting it but I found that scene to be a breath of fresh air.

My rating: ****1/2 out of *****

It loses a half star for no nudity and the outhouse scene. Seriously, you get your hottest actress to not even show a boob but then you have her jump the bones of a fat ass who just took a shit in the outhouse. And you have her lick his wiping finger to boot! What the fuck?!?

Re: "Dead Snow" Reviews/Discussion - 2010 Horror Challenge: Day 5

I'll admit it--I went into this one with quite a bit of trepidation. The DVD cover art made Dead Snow look like it was a direct-to-video title shot by troglodytes with cameras. I couldn't have been more wrong. Dead Snow is an engaging, gory, and frequently funny Norwegian take on the zombie genre, made by folks well-steeped in the genre. The camerawork is quite exceptional; at times the filmmakers actually out-Raimi Sam Raimi. Although you might be put off by all the drooling the fanboys have done over this film (as I was), this time they're actually pretty close to being right. On a side note, the Netflix streaming of this title looked absolutely great. I really, honestly, couldn't tell the difference between it and a DVD. I'm growing to love the streaming experience more and more.

Re: "Dead Snow" Reviews/Discussion - 2010 Horror Challenge: Day 5

I liked the Nazi zombies and a change of local from the typical zombie setting. Don't get too many set up in the snowy peaks. Can't say this was a great zombie flick, it never quite engaged me like Romero's films or provided the laughs like Shaun of the Dead, but it did provide for some mindless zombie fun and gore. The POV shot when the girl was being torn apart was pretty interesting and I have to admire the menacing look these zombies have sporting those Nazi uniforms.

Well, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I thought the idea of putting the zombies in the snow was genius. For some reason I was reminded of the movie Shock Waves which I also really enjoyed. I think was a tremendous pick.

Re: "Dead Snow" Reviews/Discussion - 2010 Horror Challenge: Day 5

Chalk me up as another in the thumbs up category. I bought it over at Best Buy cause I figured what the hell...I love zombies, I "love" Nazis (like Inglorious Basterds), so what could go wrong?

The only complaint was a suggestion of more nudity by the blurb on the back of the box: "medical students take a sex-and-booze-fueled ski vacation". One sex scene (and no nudity) and we saw what...2 or 3 beers consumed? But such minor pickings for an otherwise enjoyable flick.

I loved the last half of this movie. The first half just seemed really generic. I was about to give up on it until I saw the guy on the snow mobile with the chainsaws. Priceless.
