Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

Bought a few things from the Submit stuff, but the Image sale broke the bank. Merry Christmas to me.

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

Merry Christmas everyone! Hope you all are enjoying your families today; or if stuck at work like me, a good Christmas comic or two. I'll be reading the Ambush Bug Stocking Stuffer and Clerks Holiday Special today.

No new sales that I see so far, but several new bundles on Comixology if you haven't looked at them recently.
https://www.comixology.com/browse-bundle

A new freebie from Jet City Comics, Wool #1.
https://www.comixology.com/Wool-1-of...lzdC9saXN0MzQx

Not sure how long this has been available at this price, but I just noticed that the old DC Comics Presents #26, with the first appearance of the then New Teen Titans, is 99 cents.

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

I got an iPad Air 2 for Christmas and I'm redownloading my comics apps at the moment. I noticed that the Bongo Simpsons app from Comixology isn't in the iTunes store anymore. Does anyone know why it was delisted?

Well son of a bitch...

Dark Horse is having a "Farewell to Star Wars Sale"

Every Star Wars comic is 50% off...

Or you can buy EVERY Star Wars comic they've released in a megabundle for $300
...Which is considerably less than what I spent to get them all.

At 50 cents each, I might have to try the Brian Wood Star Wars.

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

Yeah, I expected they'd do something like this. If I had known for sure, I would have held out from the last few sales.

I imagine I've spent close to $300, if not more, to own maybe half of what's avaialble. $300 for everything would have been nice.

I may go through everything and pick and choose a few more runs before it's gone.

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

Just to be thorough and add a bit more info/commentary, here's what I cut n paste everywhere else:

As I hoped yet feared, Dark Horse is having a massive Star Wars sale in anticipation of them losing the license on the first. Every book is 50% off, or all 28353 pages for $300.
https://digital.darkhorse.com/browse/brand/1/

https://digital.darkhorse.com/profil...ll-megabundle/

I have probably spent close to $300 to own a quarter of it over the past few sales, so I should have waited. To buy the rest of what I don't have would cost me nearly $500, so I'm thinking about the bundle.

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

I'm tempted on the $300 bundle, but suspect at the 11th hour it may drop in price. I am wondering how much of the bundle is actually worth reading: right now the only stuff I know for sure I'd be interested in is Legacy, Thrawn Trilogy, Dark Empire, and some of the original movie adaptations. The Marvel stuff makes up a good chunk of the megabundle, but I know most of it is crap that aged very poorly.

I really enjoyed the Clone Wars series a few years ago. I've sampled a few other series. The Tales of the Jedi omnibus was pretty readable, but not amazing.

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

I'm also curious to see if Dark Horse will have an 11th hour price drop on the Star Wars megabundle (maybe a final "Tatooine Tuesday" deal) but I went ahead and ordered the slew of them.

The Dawn of the Jedi series is fun so far. I have fond memories of Dark Empire. I went through a few "best Star Wars comics" list and to my surprise a lot of them mentioned some of the older Marvel titles; for the price even if a chunk of it hasn't stood the test of time I'll have fun going through it.

I think the marvel stuff is only about 10% of the total.

If you're looking for some ala carte SW options, Amazon has 75 Kindle versions for $1.99 each.

They also have (had?) great prices on all the Creepy and Eerie collections.

I wish I knew whether the Kindle comic book content would ever be merged with Comixology. I hate buying stuff in multiple venues.

That's what's keeping me away from the Dark Horse sale. I don't even read digital, but I've bought deals on Comixology and Kindle and likely won't remember what's where when I get a tablet and start reading.

As much as I hate iTunes, it is convenient to be able to have everything together.

Why do I have a vague memory of buying a digital version of the whole shebang a year or so ago?

That doesn't make this any less of a deal, and besides it's digital.

For a long time I read 125-150 new comic titles every month, and the DH SW stuff often stood out, at least for me. Legacy, Thrawn Trilogy, and Dark Empire were indeed standouts, as was the oft overlooked X-Wing Rogue Squadron. There are 3 omnibi there, totaling almost 950 pages. I'd maybe place Dark Times in there too, though maybe just a bit lower (but not very much so).

But lots of others in there that I'd still call decent to pretty good (that was a hallmark of SW DH imo, even when they weren't top notch then they were still pretty good), including John Ostrander on several lengthy runs.

I own a large portion of these as comics (missing all the Marvel and a few other odds and ends), and have never bought anything digital. For my budget the price is prohibitive, but I'm still seriously thinking about buying this. A truly special era with a lot of great quality.

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

Thanks for the Calvin and Hobbes mention, going to buy a few with some of the no-rush shipping credit I got.

I think I have hard copies of Indispensible, Authoritative, and Homicidal Jungle Cat. At $1.99 i'm tempted to just buy them all anyway...

EDIT: And after looking at the list of released collections and never having bought the complete collection in physical form, I think i'll buy them all since it appears these 6 encompasses almost all of the Calvin and Hobbes strips except for the last two books and it's nice to have them handy. For anyone else that might be curious like myself about them...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...d_Hobbes_books

Before the release of The Complete Calvin and Hobbes, the complete set of newspaper strips were collected in the following eight books:[1]

The Essential Calvin and Hobbes, 1988
The Authoritative Calvin and Hobbes, 1990
The Indispensable Calvin and Hobbes, 1992
Attack of the Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons, 1992
The Days Are Just Packed, 1993
Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat, 1994
There's Treasure Everywhere, 1996
It's a Magical World, 1996

It's a great deal! I just wish I could shake this nagging feeling that I already have it somewhere. Digitally I mean, I own all the physical books.

Happy New Year everyone!

Dark Horse didn't lower that SW bundle price like I hoped. I guess scores of pissed off $300 buyers wouldn't be worth the extra last minute sales.

I would laugh though if Marvel acquired the rights eventually for reprints and put them as part of Marvel Unlimited.
