Re: The Walking Dead (and other zombie discussion)

I finally got around to finishing this arc. It wasn't all that and it felt like a retread of their time at the prison. Negan seemed like the same guy they fought with then except this time he was cussing a lot. They were pretty much interchangeable. I think it's time to stop reading this and wait a year to catch up. Hopefully, it isn't more of the same BS.

Re: The Walking Dead (and other zombie discussion)

It was a little weird figuring out what was going on at first.

Spoiler:
Starts with the intro of the new people, Rick with the haircut and beard and acting like Gregory, Andrea being called mom, jesus looking different. I wasn't really sure what was going on until the end of the issue. Seemed like a longer issue too. I think the jump ahead should help pick up the pace they can fill in with a lot of stuff that has happened the past 2 years while they deal with current events

Yeah, that was a really good issue. Interested to see where it goes from here. Methinks it won't be all peaceful and pastoral for long.

I really liked the device that Kirkman used where
Spoiler:
he used a group of newbies to re-introduce the "two years later" time jump, so we were sort of seeing Rick and everyone else and the changes they've been through from new eyes.

Anyone else know immediately who Karl was talking to?

I kinda had a feeling since I was getting to the end and we haven't seen or heard anything from him yet. Just have a feeling it'll come back to bite Rick in the ass somehow.

Re: The Walking Dead (and other zombie discussion)

I'd grown bored with the last arc way before it ended. However, this plot device got me pumped.

Spoiler:
Kinda interesting to Rick and his people actually successful at reestablishing some semblance to normal life. As someone who's all about the details, I also liked the mention that bird populations were growing tremendously. This is exactly what would happen if society broke down and humanity collapsed.

If the end of issue 129 alludes to what I think will happen, i'm going right back to being annoyed!

Agreed.

Spoiler:
I hope we get more than a couple of issues where we see what "normal" life is like for these people.

I had assumed as much when that one walker "spoke" a few issues ago. I'm actually disappointed. It would have been even more terrifying if the walkers had someone gained some level of sentience.

I just read TPB 22, which goes through issue 22.

(I appreciate how people use spoiler tags in this thread since floppy/trade reading rates can vary wildly.)

Spoiler:
I agree with madcougar that the thought of them using weapons and strategy was pretty chilling. However, I think it's still a very interesting development. Who are these people and what are they doing? What would be really disappointing would be if they just fell back on the same "I covered myself with slop and became invisible to them" device that been around forever.

Re: The Walking Dead (and other zombie discussion)

I'm caught up as well.

Spoiler:
I actually think it would play off as kind of hokey if the zombies actually started gaining any sort of intelligence. Kind of neat to have people wearing them as masks/costumes, although I think it would have been neat to have them keep up the charade for a bit longer and show them scaring others.

Any thoughts on the last few issues? I'm liking the few side stories they've given us.

Re: The Walking Dead (and other zombie discussion)

I buy the hardcovers so I'm only up to #132. I actually think this would be a good end for the series.... showing them living post-Negan and then introducing a new group of people who do not trust them. They could leave things open for future movies if they wanted to go that route.

Re: The Walking Dead (and other zombie discussion)

Holy shit, this last issue #144 was probably the first shocking moment for me in a long time.

Spoiler:
Excellent job teasing a potential big death at the end. I honestly kept expecting to see Michonne's head at the end. No one as major as her, but Rosita and Ezekiel. Damn!

Re: The Walking Dead (and other zombie discussion)

Yeah, #144 was a big old fat HOLY SHIT!

This one's going to haunt me. No build-up, and that shit just came right out of nowhere. The split-screen "reveals" were also well done. And you're just dreading turning the page because you don't know who...

Fuck.

Prediction:
Spoiler:
Rick's going to have to turn Negan loose on these sick fucks.

Holy crap, there's been a threadbump after I finished TPB 23 (through issue 138) and read this thread last night and decided not to post on my phone 'cause I couldn't multi-quote. Again, thanks to folks for using spoiler tags!

Sometimes I hate being right. I guess I'll see what they make of it, though. But issues 133-138
Spoiler:
were quite eventful, at least. I thought that they really had killed off Maggie, which would've sucked, but we'll see what happens. Not getting checked out after "recovering" is usually a ticket to disaster.

Yeah 144 was definitely one of the bigger shockers.

Re: The Walking Dead (and other zombie discussion)

Just started on them as I'm watching the show How big and unwieldy (if at all) are the compendiums? The library has all three and it'd be great to get through all those comics for free. Doing the Comixology trial and I read the first two issues.

The compendiums are comic-sized, about 7"x10" and around 3" thick, so they're big.

Unless you have arthritis or carpal tunnel, they shouldn't be too unwieldy too read.

They are the cheapest way to read the series, each book costing around $60 retail and containing 48 issues, but the downside to these is that they only come out every four years and the sheer thickness of the books makes it seem to me that they might fall apart due to the weight on the glued spine. If you're checking them out from a library, the latter shouldn't be a concern.

Re: The Walking Dead (and other zombie discussion)

Well the library also carries the individual volumes but I figured this way I only have to get 3 items. I'd be sitting down reading them.

Re: The Walking Dead (and other zombie discussion)

I initially got the first compendium to start reading the series. I tried it, but it was too unwieldy so I switched to the hardcovers. 12 issues at about $25 in a hardcover version was the way to go for me. Looks good on the shelf too, and they come out every year or so, so there isnt as long a wait to get the new one as opposed to the compendiums. Of course, if you're getting them from the library none of that should matter.
