Personally I'm only getting the first 2 (Planet and Beneath). Some people like the 3rd one (the time travel one) but it never really appealed to me, although it does have Kahn (Ricardo M.) The last two, especially the last one, were just a waste of time IMHO. The only reason I could see for getting the box set would be the documentary disk. After getting suckered by the same thing in Aliens though I'm not falling for that again (although in that series I liked 1-3 so it was still worth it to buy the box, plus I got to trade the documentary for the original Platoon ).

If you are only interested in the first one, then don't buy the boxset! POTA will be available as a single disc. If you can, rent one or two of the sequels on DVD to see if they interest you. As for me, I have the boxset on pre-order but I happen to like all 5 films. Aliens OTOH, I won't buy the box, just 1 and 2.

I think i saw the documentary back a couple years ago when AMC was having their special 25th anniversary PoA or something like that. The documentary was decent, but nothing spectacular -- i wouldn't buy a box set just for it.

this documentary was hosted/narrated by roddy mcdowell -- i guess it might not necessarily be the same one.

I think you will enjoy the box set but definitely the last one is the pits. It was the worst of the series.

Hey, given what they did to humans, I say "plane away!!"

Edited to add: "Take your stinking lathe off me, you damn dirty ape!"

I'd get the entire boxset.

I would get the whole boxset for Planers of Apes. However, Planet of the Apes really sucked and I wouldn't buy that boxset.

Seriously, get the box set if you are a fan, but for me the first one was the only one I liked and would bother watching.

POTA was definitely the best one, "Beneath" was decent, "Escape" was very good, "Conquest" was stretching it, and "Battle" was just plain bad.

I just watched the series in the Planet of the Apes box set and I must say I wish I hadn't bought it. The first and maybe the second movie are ok, but the rest REALLY stink. Movies #3 and onward look more like episodes from a poorly done 1970's TV series. The acting is awful, the dialogue ridiculous, the costumes and sets look cheap. (a central computer/intelligence center with corded trimline phones, toggle switches on everything, and all activity broadcast over a PA system?) The only thing that is good about them is that they tend be short, ~90 minutes or so. (I kept checking the time remaining display while viewing!) The video transfers are pretty good, but the audio sounds like reprocessed mono. Don't buy without renting first!

The budget waned as the series progressed. According to the A&E documentary, fake stuff was later used big time, like cardboard apes and stuff.

I was on the edge but now I'm getting off with just the first one. My mind is made up.
Well, it's made up of all sorts of things.

Hmm, maybe I should repeat and paraphrase:

"Take your stinking paws off yourself, you damn dirty ape!"
