A Hidden Life (2019, D: Terrence Malick) -- WWII film

With Knight of Cups arriving on Blu-ray this week, his Austin-set drama Weightless finally completed, and his long-gestating Voyage of Time set for an IMAX release this October, director Terrence Malick seems to be taking no breaks as he’s already looking towards his next project. Today brings news of what it’ll be, and that it’ll find him heading to Europe.

He’ll next be directing Radegund, which will depict the life of Austria’s Franz Jägerstätter, a conscientious objector during World War II who was put to death at the age of 36 for undermining military actions. In 2007, Pope Benedict XVI declared Jägerstätter a martyr, and he was beatified in a ceremony. Set to play Jägerstätter is August Diehl (Inglourious Basterds, The Counterfeiters), while Valerie Pachner will also join.

This was first announced via Medienboard Förderzusagen’s posting that they are giving 400,000 Euros to the project, and a number of German news sources followed up that it will be Malick’s next film. The drama is set to shoot at Studio Babelsberg in Potsdam, Germany this summer — but, knowing Malick, it won’t be the only location.

The film will find Malick returning to the World War II era following The Thin Red Line, but of course taking on what looks to be a smaller scope. As for the title, Radegund: it refers to the Thuringian princess and Frankish queen from the 6th century who found protection under the Church after fleeing her marriage when her husband had her brother murdered.

Thanks to One Big Soul for the alert about the project and as we await more details, check out The Refusal, a feature documentary about Jägerstätter’s story, as well as a video essay on nature through the eyes of Malick.

Hopefully this turns out to be an actual film and not some meandering 2nd grade poetry with cool camera shots.

So he takes a 20 year break, does a couple, then another 6 years or so, then does 1 a year. I'm kind of hoping he starts taking breaks again.

Was just about to start a thread about this. To bring balance to the universe, now that Malick is making a film a year, I think Woody Allen should wait until he's 101 to make his next film.

I had the privilege of attending a screening of Rossellini's Journey to Italy with Malick in attendance. There was a Q&A after and he discussed some of the process of making this. He said he enjoyed having a script for this one. It was nice to be able to show up and know what was being shot that day. It seemed to me that he was happy to move on from the type of process he was experimenting with on previous films. Having the time to take multiple takes of the same thing, as opposed to just letting the camera run and putting things together in the editing room. I know we joke about the pretentiousness that some of his films convey... but honestly, he is nothing like that in person. He's very nice, soft spoken and humbled. I chatted with him for a bit after. I am on a real high. This was like meeting the Loch Ness monster of directors.

Yeah. He's a nice mellow guy. I found him to be disturbingly relaxed. Like... he doesn't mirror his filmmaking as the person he is.

dex, thank you very much for mentioning your screening of "Journey To Italy." I just saw it for the first time on Hulu and it's a terrific film.

Great to hear that Malick is a modest person. The last film of his I saw was The Tree of Life.

That gets me stoked. I really liked Knight of Cups, but at the same time, I think he has taken that type of 'no script, find the film the film in the editing room' aesthetic as far as he possible could. Some would say he took it too far. I guess we have one more film like that in "Weightless". We'll see how that turns out. I only wish he had applied that more conventional type of filmmaking to Tree of Life, because according to Sean Penn it was the greatest script he ever read.

Tree of Life will be getting a new cut via Criterion, FYI. I asked him directly. I can't wait to see how that turns out.

It has been hinted at for a while... even in the newsletter. But I asked him the status of it and he said he just recently got done working on it and it should be out next summer.

Any hints on the new cut? I tried my darndest to dig it, but just couldn't. But if it's a drastically new cut, I'll see it again.

major coolness. while new extras seems like a guarantee, not real sure how you could improve on the current bluray with it's top notch PQ and 7.1 audio - Dolby Atmos it ?? (oh how I wish Criterion would release a UHD 4K disc)

I wanted to like Tree of Life, I even watched it 3 times. I hope this new cut can fix it.

re: A Hidden Life (2019, D: Terrence Malick) -- WWII film

“Song to Song” isn’t the only new Terrence Malick movie premiering this year. Though both its title and release date could change — and, this being Malick, neither would be a surprise — “Radegund” is currently set to make its festival debut sometime in 2017. A return to World War II for the “Thin Red Line” writer/director, the film is based on the life of Franz Jägerstätter.

Here’s the premise: “Opening at Jägerstätter’s home in the idyllic Austrian countryside, Radegund (working title) follows Franz (August Diehl) and his beloved wife, Fani (Valerie Pachner), along their remarkable path of resistance. Told through real wartime letters, this stirring love story finds the couple in conflict with the members of their close-knit town, their church, their government, and even their friends — all of which brings them to a dramatic choice. Set in World War II-ravaged Europe, ‘Radegund’ is a timeless story of bravery, conscience, and romantic love.”

“Terry has long wanted to tell this sweeping and emotionally charged story,” said producer Grant Hill (who also worked with Malick on “The Thin Red Line” and “The Tree of Life”) in a statement. “This story of love, sacrifice and destiny resonates as much in today’s complex world as it did in war torn Europe in 1941. The questions are the same, and the choices equally as difficult.”

Notably, frequent Malick collaborator Emmanuel Lubezki isn’t credited as the cinematographer; that honor is held by Jörg Widmer, who worked as a camera operator on “Song to Song,” “Knight of Cups,” “To the Wonder” and “The Tree of Life.” Matthias Schoenaerts, Bruno Ganz, Martin Wuttke and Maria Simon all co-star in “Radegund,” for which Mister Smith Entertainment is handling international sales beginning at next month’s Berlin Film Festival.

Who would've ever believed that we'd reach a point in time when Terrence Malick was making so many films that it'd be hard to keep track of them all.

Fuuuuuuuuck Terry is really making us wait (As usual). The first post is over 2 years old and still not even a teaser.

Sorry in advance if you thought this was a trailer bump.

There was a little talk that it could premiere this fall at festivals, but that obviously doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Would suck if it is another year before it drops.

Also in the strong possibility column, there’s Terrence Malick’s long-in-the-works Radegund. We hear the movie is not entirely finished but is screening for Cannes.
