Re: Phife Dawg dead at 45

Indeed. ATCQ made two of my all-time favorite albums and Phife improved by leaps and bounds from their debut. (I frequently flip-flop between which I think is superior: Midnight Marauders or The Low End Theory.) I saw ATCQ live once back in high school, on a bill with De La Soul and The Alkaholiks. Hip-hop shows are very hit or miss with me*, but that one was a great experience.

*My enjoyment usually decreases with increase in the size of the entourage on stage and amount of time spent telling the soundman to turn up the monitors.

"Drink a lot of soda so they call me Dr. Pepper!"

Ugh, this is awful. I absolutely love their first three albums.

"Microphone check, one, two, what is this?"

Re: Phife Dawg dead at 45

Quest's first three albums were on repeat essentially continuously for me in college. I saw them live in about 1992. I miss that inventive / positive moment in hip hop before everyone decided that they needed to "keep it real". People like Quest, De La, Black Sheep and Pharcyde, followed later by Dan the Automator, MF Doom, Kool Keith etc... great music. Hip hop remains interesting to me musically, but it's shot through with a heavy dose of dumbed-down tough guy misogynistic braggadocio bullshit. Quest and their ilk wanted none of that crap.

If I'm reading this correctly, diabetes killed him?

Sad news. Midnight Marauders in particular I listened to a ton, along with Low End Theory.

Re: Phife Dawg dead at 45

This just fucking sucks. RIP Phife. It's weird - while he would not make my list of top 10 MC's - he probably would make my top 10 list of "MC's most likely to lay down a dope verse that people will still be liberally quoting from 10 years later". His lyrics were always dope, funny (without being corny), and flow off the tongue so easily. He also deserves props for one of the biggest improvements from one album to the next in hip hop history. He was "ai-ight" on People's Travels (maybe under-utilized I guess), but when Low End Theory dropped, it was like the middle infielder who is suddenly hitting 45 HR's a year out of nowhere. Just one incredible verse after another.

Been listening to Midnight Marauders and Low End Theory a lot just in the last couple years. Dude could flow. Love the way he complemented Q-Tip stylistically.

The Funky Diabetic, RIP.

This one got to me... The Low End Theory is one of my favs of all time and that album with People's Travels and Midnight Marauders were a soundtrack to my HS and first year of college.

Re: Phife Dawg dead at 45

Today has been absolutely crap. You guys knew him as Phife Dawg and I knew him as Mailk. We grew up together, I've known him since he was about 11 he lived up the street from me in St. Albans. Jarobi lived in the house behind me. All I have are these childhood memories swirling in my head and I remember the very last time I saw him. We neighborhood kids just lost another friend a few months ago to a motorcycle accident and we were all talking about how we need to have a reunion in the summer. Life happens, you all get scattered and plans never come together. Hard to believe I will never see him again but it makes me so happy to see what great things people say about him. I can honestly say I have never had reason to say anything bad about him, he was never a jerk, the fame NEVER got to his head. Just an all around good human being.

Re: Phife Dawg dead at 45

Will def miss Phife Dawg, sad Q-Tip let his ego ruin the group then and to this day. Had a chance to rekindle it and he threw it away. Would have loved for more music from Tribe. Sad day in the Hip Hop community. Sorry for your loss zoomgirl.
