Strike Back: Origins (Cinemax) -- 6 episode miniseries -- Begins 10/25

Every time I write about Cinemax's "Strike Back" returning for another season, I always have to include a footnote explaining that the show aired for a year in the UK with an entirely different cast, headed by Richard Armitage and future "The Walking Dead" star Andrew Lincoln. Armitage's John Porter appears briefly at the start of the Cinemax/Sky co-produced version of the show, but Cinemax has largely treated its episodes as the start of the series, while British audiences know the series predates Philip Winchester, Sullivan Stapleton and company.

That situation is about to change, as I'm hearing that Cinemax will be airing the six-episode Armitage season later this fall, on Fridays at 10 after the current Winchester/Stapleton season wraps.

To lessen confusion for viewers who don't know the production backstory, the Armitage episodes will air under the title "Strike Back: Origins."

You guys know of my fondness for the Cinemax incarnation of the show — it's low-budget action, but smart and well-crafted — and I've been curious to see the earlier episodes for a while. Now I'll get the chance.

Read more at http://www.hitfix.com/whats-alan-wat...btRj7Z08dgx.99

It will air after season 3 wraps. This version starred Richard Armitage (John Porter) who was killed off in the Cinemax 1st season and Andrew Lincoln from The Walking Dead.

Really good news and smart of Cinemax to air it.

I have not seen the UK season, so I will gladly watch this, especially with it being in HD.

re: Strike Back: Origins (Cinemax) -- 6 episode miniseries -- Begins 10/25

The UK 1st season was called "Chris Ryan's Strike Back" since it was based on the book. The overall seasonal arc involves John Porter trying to figure out who/how/why he was framed for something he did not do. Every two episodes also deals with a mission in that specific theater of operation, the format is identical to the first Cinemax aired season. The first season's special effects budget was less, but the actions and tactics were more realistic. There were no nudity.

It'd be interesting to see if Cinemax will add new opening and closing credits to the relaunch of the first series.

I think Cinemax has to re-brand it since they are using a new name.

I'd like to see them use the same theme song & opening credits from the current incarnation of the show.

Since this is finally airing in the U.S., it probably means that HBO will release it on DVD/BD.

That's what I'm hoping for, though I'm lowering expectations knowing that it won't be the same series as the U.S. version.

don't want to spoil too much, but this first series got me when Armitage keistered a knife before going on an Op. after that i was in, no pun intended.

i don't recall there being a relentless array of titties, but otherwise just as much with the cool action, and engaging storyline. i look forward to this being released on non-pal blu.

Watched it two weeks ago. Very similar to the US version and well worth a watch.

First movie is excellent, second movie is great, and the final movie is very average.

Looking forward to this as I've only seen it with a pretty lousy video transfer.

Glad to hear it. This should fill the void until Banshee returns in January.

re: Strike Back: Origins (Cinemax) -- 6 episode miniseries -- Begins 10/25

It's official. Cinemax's press release. October 25th at 10pm

STRIKE BACK: ORIGINS, STARRING RICHARD ARMITAGE AND

ANDREW LINCOLN, TO DEBUT OCT. 25 ON CINEMAX

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 5, 2013 – STRIKE BACK: ORIGINS will begin its six-episode premiere run Oct. 25 on CINEMAX, marking the first time the series will be seen in the United States, it was announced today by Kary Antholis, president, HBO Miniseries and CINEMAX Original Programming. Presented in the UK in 2010 on Sky, the show was acquired by HBO/CINEMAX from BBC Worldwide Sales and Distribution and was produced by Left Bank Pictures and Ingenious Broadcasting. Left Bank Pictures currently produces “Strike Back” with partners CINEMAX and Sky.

Taking over the Friday-night 10:00 p.m. (ET/PT) time slot of “Strike Back” after it completes its third season on Oct. 18, STRIKE BACK: ORIGINS stars Richard Armitage (“The Hobbit”) and Andrew Lincoln (“The Walking Dead”). Originally titled “Chris Ryan’s Strike Back,” the show was based on the book series of the same name by former British Special Forces soldier Ryan.

STRIKE BACK: ORIGINS tells the story of John Porter (Armitage), an SAS soldier who realizes a connection between a current hostage situation and a mission he ran in Iraq in 2003. He appeals to Hugh Collinson (Lincoln), a fellow team member from that mission who now runs the stealth counterterrorism unit Section 20 for the UK government, to allow him to join the rescue mission. Porter and Collinson have gone in sharply different directions in the years since their original mission went awry, with one enjoying a successful military career and the other’s life falling apart.

Porter makes an appearance in the first season of CINEMAX’s “Strike Back,” during which he is captured on a mission and Section 20 head Col. Eleanor Grant (Amanda Mealing) brings in U.S. Special Forces soldier Damien Scott (Sullivan Stapleton) to work with Michael Stonebridge (Philip Winchester) and the team. Scott previously ran a mission with Porter in Iraq and had knowledge of their target, terrorist Latif.

Headsup

Strike Back: Origins should now be showing up on your DVRs. However, as some of you know, this series aired 3 years ago in the UK. So the episode dates are from 2010.

Set your DVRs accordingly.

Since this series is only 6 episodes, I think this will be the thread for all 6 episodes.

dex14, can you make a little tweak on the thread title?

Call it...Strike Back: Origins (Cinemax) -- 6 episode miniseries -- Begins 10/25

Re: Strike Back: Origins (Cinemax) -- 6 episode miniseries -- Begins 10/25

Bump, premieres tonight for those who haven't watched it

Synopsis for episode 1:

British Special Forces attempt a risky rescue mission in Iraq on the eve of the 2003 invasion by allied forces. Led by SAS's John Porter (Richard Armitage) and joined by intelligence specialist Hugh Collinson (Andrew Lincoln), the team looks to rescue an executive of a British arms manufacturer who is being held by fundamentalists. While the mission is a success, several team members are killed. Porter is held responsible for their deaths due to a snap judgment call he made during the rescue.

Porter's career does not recover from the controversial mission. Now, in 2010, his personal life is also in shambles, and he has a strained relationship with his ex-wife and daughter.

After seeing the news that journalist Katie Dartmouth (Orla Brady) was kidnapped in Iraq, Porter realizes there is a connection to his 2003 operation. He seeks to join the rescue mission being run by the British government counterterrorism unit Section 20, which is headed up by Collinson. Although Collinson and his team members Thompson (Jodhi May) and Prendiville (Shelley Conn) have doubts, he assigns Porter to the mission.

In Iraq, things quickly go awry and Porter goes rogue to find the journalist, linking pieces of his previous mission to the new one.

Written by Jed Mercurio; directed by Daniel Percival.

No spoilers if you've already seen it!!!!

Re: Strike Back: Origins (Cinemax) -- 6 episode miniseries -- Begins 10/25

Did anyone with Cinemax watch this yet?

Anyways, I did watch this tonight. I liked it. Very different in tone compared to the SB we all know and love, but being that this was the actual 1st season, it's kind of cool seeing how this show evolved. Kind of weird seeing Andrew Lincoln on here speaking in his normal voice. Looking forward to learning more about John Porter.

The opening mission from 2003 in Iraq was cool and I thought it was interesting that the kid that Porter didn't kill would come into play in 2010. I get that Porter didn't want to kill that kid, but he was kind of responsible for fucking up that mission.

Did not expect the terrorists to chop off that reporter's hand.

Some of you may remember the reporter from Fringe. That's Orla Brady, who played Peter's Mom.

Re: Strike Back: Origins (Cinemax) -- 6 episode miniseries -- Begins 10/25

Has anyone else been watching this on Cinemax or am I the only one?

Anyways, I just finished the last 2 episodes. Even though it's really different than the Strike Back we all know and love, their is some good action in it and I like Porter. Too he's dead in the current incarnation.

So Porter knows the truth about Collinson and how he murdered the 2 other soldiers from the 1st episode.

Just a theory as I don't know the circumstances of how Origins ends, but I think Collinson may have had something to do with setting up Porter in the 1st episode of the Cinemax season and getting him killed by Latif's people.

Even the black assassin that Porter rescued from that prison sort of hinted at something dirty going on.

Yup, still watching here (though haven't watched this week's installment yet). I prefer the US version overall, but still think this version has a few strong points the US doesn't have -- namely that it's a bit more grounded and realistic. Don't need to suspend your disbelief the entire episode.

I enjoyed Strike Back: Origins but didn't appreciate the ending. I started re-watching Season One of the Cinemax version and like that they are using the same musical cues form the Origins series.

Re: Strike Back: Origins (Cinemax) -- 6 episode miniseries -- Begins 10/25

Okay, I just finished episode 6 tonight, the finale.

Honestly I hated the ending. It was so abrupt. This was a far cry from the Strike Back we all know and love.

Episode 6 was probably the worst of the 6 episodes. I think it limped to the finish line. The resolution to Collinson being discovered as the bad guy was pretty weak IMO.

Although Porter displayed some badass qualities, I'm kind of glad he was killed off in the Cinemax 1st season.

Agree. I couldn't help but keep staring at her each time she appeared on screen. Really pretty. Too bad this wasn't a Cinemax produced season.

Hey at least we still have Richmond and hopefully the hot Russian again next year.
