Fathom Events? Anyone ever go?
We always have to sit through the same opera commercial for Fathom Events every time we go to the movies. And the audio skips right at the end, which I love. That's been running for years like that. This last weekend they also had a Led Zepplin concert advertised.
I cannot imagine who is going to these things.
I take that back...my mom tried to go to one in her hometown but then found out it was like $30 for a ticket. I don't know if that's the case everywhere, but you could see the extremely well regarded Minnesota Opera for a fraction on that price.
The idea of going to a movie theater and paying a bunch of money to watch something like that...I just can't believe they can support the business model. Of course, we do have a pretty big theater and music community here so maybe it plays better in other areas.

Not sure if it was Fathom but I went to 'Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles' years ago. It was the same thing. 1 night event in theaters across the country. Didn't cost more then a regular night price movie & just played like a normal movie other then it had a making of feature after it.

I was going to go to one this past month when they were suppose to be showing the original Halloween in theaters. I checked the link quite a few times but it kept listing a different film. That was the only time I looked into going to one of their offerings.

I was skeptical about them as well but I really enjoyed seeing Lawrence of Arabia on the big screen about a month ago. And I will be checking out the Zeppelin show tomorrow since I missed it last time, pretty sure it's not $30 for that.

I've been planning to go to one of the operas at some point. Still haven't done it though.
I already go to the Utah Opera a few times a year, but the Metropolitan Opera is in a different league.
I would definitely go if they broadcasted some Broadway shows.

I went to a Kevin Smith one-night-only live event about a year ago...it was a lot of fun. There were probably about 25 other people in the theater. Tickets were $15 for that.
My biggest problem with the Fathom Events is that they're always on weeknights...I'd go to more if they were on weekends.

Before the new Star Trek Next Gen season on blu ray comes out Fathom events plays two fan favorite episodes from that season. Pretty cool to have Star Trek show on the big screen. I think one is coming up soon.

I have been once, to see an anime movie (Sword of the Stranger). The ticket cost was pretty normal from what I remember.

Back when Star Trek: The Original Series was being released on blu Fathom showed two episodes on the big screen and it was fun. Tickets were like $12 and there was a nice sized crowd. They're having another event at the end of the month for Season 2 of The Next Generation and I plan to go.
I too wish these things were on the weekends but my guess is the theaters don't want to give up the premium time.

Huh. Well, okay - I guess people go!
I saw that Star Trek one and jut thought I could watch those eps for free on Netflix But I can see how a crowd would make it more fun.

I've seen several performances from the Met, but watching the entire Ring Cycle -- several of them more than once -- was an absolute joy.
I've also checked out some classic movies as well as a Live Rifftrax, which was amazing fun.

I've been tempted by the classic films but not yet bitten. I like the concept of opera on the big screen but can't really see myself going. Actually, that kind of sums up my feelings on opera--I like the concept but never go (OK, I did see Porgy and Bess a year or so ago).
I went to the one-night-only Stephen Sondheim Company with Neil Patrick Harris and had a great time, but technically I'm not sure if it was a Fathom event. I'd probably go to more of those.
Interesting. The Wikipedia page for Fathom has been deleted as too advertising-like.

I don't think the 'Company' event was a Fathom event - but don't quote me.
I've seen the Coachella film - the video quality was weak
'The Birds' actually looked really really good for a recorded satellite feed
'Lawrence of Arabia' was excellent but unlike the typical Fathom quality - this was actual 4K DCP hard drive

Screenvision did Sondheim's Company. I didn't get a chance to see it, so I have no idea if it was a DCP or satellite feed. However, Sony's (ill-fated) The Hot Ticket were DCP releases as I saw Rent that way.
I've only seen two Fathom events. The Descent which was a "sneak preview," so there was actually a 35mm print involved. The other being the Coachella documentary which looked like shit as it was a satellite feed.
I'll start giving Fathom my hard earnedmoney time when they do actual DCP releases a la Lawrence of Arabia.

I went to see Back to the Future about a year ago. They couldn't get the movie to play so AMC ended up giving us free passes. Saw The Town instead.
So I guess my answer is yes, but not really...

Re: Fathom Events? Anyone ever go?
Depends on the opera and the production. I saw the Utah Opera's production of Il Trovatore last month and was underwhelmed by it - a really lame story and a really boring set and costumes. The singing itself wasn't particularly great either.
Stuff like The Magic Flute and La Boheme, on the other hand, I find to be very entertaining (when they're done well.)
