DVD, tivo, VHS...advice?
Ok, I'm revising my question re: the dvd player recommendation request.
Which device will be the best choice for what I want to do in the way of recording TV? Here's all I want:
Record an NFL game or two per week during the season, and maybe 1 tv program a week.
I'd like to have some way of getting the show I recorded off the tivo and save it to a dvd or sdram card. That way, if the HDD crashes, I still have a copy of what I recorded.

If that's all you plan to record I'd go for the DVD recorder. You can get one for under $100. Tivo is around triple that price and IMO is for much more daily recording (along with many other features). I've owned both. Tivo is great, but for 2-3 recordings a week, you can get a DVD recorder, set the times to record, throw a rewriteable disc in there and record then erase when its full

I agree. Love Tivo, but it's even more than $300. It's $150 + $15/month or $650 one time to get into it. If you would really use it, worth it. But if you are only looking at a couple shows a week, probably not a good value. They are able to transfer to computer to do whatever you want with the recording.
If you already have a PC that could work for this, a tuner can be pretty inexpensive. The better ones are still near $100, but I've seen them as little as $15. And you can save however you want from the PC.
The cheapest way might be NFL Rewind for $40/year, you get every game online either in full or their speedy 30 minute version. With that version, you can watch 6 games in the time most people watch one. And watch the TV show online for free since most are available on the network's websites. Obviously, these are delayed, not live, but that is what you are asking about.
Otherwise, the no-name DVRs in the other thread might be good.
A DVD recorder is going to record in SD. I don't think you mentioned anywhere if you wanted HD quality. Most of these other choices record in HD.
