Splinter Cell: Blacklist

Fuck yes!

LOS ANGELES — June 4, 2012 —Today, at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Ubisoft® unveiled the development of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell® Blacklist™, the next blockbuster title in the critically acclaimed Tom Clancy franchise. The game will be available worldwide for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, and Windows PC in spring 2013.

As the first production project from Ubisoft Toronto, with support from Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Shanghai, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Blacklist delivers a gripping modern-day special ops storyline with a new level of technical innovation and quality. The game includes voice recognition features on Kinect™ for Xbox 360®, an arsenal of new gadgets and reinvented classic weapons, as well as a new “Killing-in-Motion” fighting style, which allows players to strike with lethal precision by marking and executing multiple enemies in one fluid motion.

In the game, a group of 12 rogue nations have had enough of the United States’ military presence in their countries. In an effort to force the withdrawal of the U.S. forces, they mastermind “The Blacklist,” a countdown of escalating terrorist attacks on U.S. assets. Given a presidential mandate and the power to act above the law, players take on the role of lethal operative Sam Fisher. Outfitted with Sam’s infamous tactical suit and goggles, players will infiltrate terrorist cells while using ruthless interrogation methods to extract crucial information to prevent the next Blacklist attack.

The thrilling storyline and wide range of intense, eye-opening missions will propel players to find those responsible for these deadly assaults by any means necessary. Throughout the game, Sam and Fourth Echelon seek out their missions aboard a new Mobile Command Center housed inside a stealth aircraft. Ready to take off at a moment’s notice, Fourth Echelon is equipped with unlimited resources and cutting-edge technology including a Strategic Mission Interface that reports global events in real time.

“Ubisoft Toronto has taken great care to develop an evolutionary Sam Fisher experience that takes the franchise to dramatic new heights,” said Maxime Beland, creative director at Ubisoft. “With exciting gameplay enhanced by full motion-capture performances, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Blacklist offers a highly cinematic experience that will immerse fans and gamers new to the series into an intricate, action-packed adventure.”

Operate without Restrictions
Sam is back in his tactical suit and goggles, and he’s more deadly than ever. He is the only secret operative with the power to act above the law, and uses ruthless methods to interrogate enemies in order to extract crucial information that will prevent the next Blacklist attack. Pursuing the terrorists to the far reaches of the world, Sam flies from exotic locales to US cities as he races against the clock to find out who’s behind the Blacklist. Thrilling gameplay is enhanced by full motion performance capture, creating a highly cinematic experience.

Kill in Motion
Always one step ahead, Killing in Motion lets Sam strike with lethal precision by marking and executing multiple enemies in one fluid motion. Active Sprint allows him to traverse the environment easily and fluidly, climb walls and leap over barriers in order to reach his next target while on the move.

Unleash the power of Fourth Echelon Prototypes
Infiltrate terrorist cells by using new gadgets such as the upgraded snake cam and micro tri-rotor drone which allows Sam to scout ahead, mark targets remotely, distract enemies, or explode with frag grenade force. Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell® Blacklist™ is also bringing back fan-favorites like the sticky shocker, and for close quarters combat, players can wield the curved and brutal Karambit knife.

Build a New Echelon
With a mandate directly from the president, Sam is building a whole new Echelon unit; his team, his way. Anna “Grim” Grimsdottir is his technical operations manager, CIA operative Isaac Briggs brings additional firepower, and resident hacker Charlie Cole rounds out his support crew. Fourth Echelon is a fully mobile ops unit with unlimited resources and cutting-edge technology aboard the repurposed stealth airliner, the Paladin.

Enjoy a Fully Integrated Experience
Sam and his team are aware of terrorist attacks in real time thanks to the Strategic Mission Interface (SMI). The SMI allows the team to receive data about mission objectives while on the move. Players can earn money for completing missions and objectives and buy upgraded weapons and items from the SMI hub aboard the Paladin.

Re: Splinter Cell: Blacklist

It looks like Fisher is younger than the last game. Meh. Conviction was a solid conclusion to the Ironside era of Fisher, so this doesn't look like much of a loss.

Re: Splinter Cell: Blacklist

Not a big Halo or Gears fan, so I always thought Splinter Cell was the most significant console exclusive. Pleasantly surprised to see this one will be on the PS3 as well.

Disappointed in the lack of Micael Ironside, but the gameplay they showed definitely has me interested.

Re: Splinter Cell: Blacklist

Splinter Cell has never been exclusive, except for the first one for like 6 months.

Also this isn't Splinter Cell. This is Call of Assassin's Recon: Medal of War: Cell.

Re: Splinter Cell: Blacklist

You're right.

Didn't get into this generation of games til 2010, I played Double Agent on the regular Xbox so I wasn't thinking of it as a current one. Still nice that it isn't exclusive like Conviction was.

Yeah, it threw me off that Ironside will no longer be Fisher. However, Conviction was a very good swan song for Ironside as Fisher.

From the plotline, it seems this is a direct sequel to Conviction so it is weird that Fisher is now younger. I wonder why they didn't simply keep the new guy as the physical performer and use Ironside for the facial animation and vocals.

Re: Splinter Cell: Blacklist

I was kind of hoping that since this game will not be a Xbox exclusive that they might think of releasing Conviction for the PS3.

I saw the pics and I was thinkining he looked younger, too. Wasn't he all beat up in Conviction?

I've liked most of the games from this series so I'll probably pick this one up.

I know I read it in another forum but I'm trying to recall where.

EDIT: Found it. It seems the poster screwed up and confused a PS3 listing for Blacklist with that of Conviction.

Re: Splinter Cell: Blacklist

When Splinter Cell Blacklist releases in 2013, it'll be the return of Sam Fisher, one of the most popular video game characters today. But there will be something very different about this super spy: his voice. Yes, the gravelly baritone of Michael Ironside will no longer be the voice of Sam Fisher.

Max Beland, the director of Blacklist, explained the change in an interview with Polygon.

"It was probably the hardest decision of my career," he said, speaking of changing the voice from Michael Ironside to a younger actor, Eric Johnson. The decision was based on Ubisoft Toronto's decision to focus on advancements in performance capture technology. Modern day performance capture, like the kind seen in Avatar, requires that the actors physically act out their scenes as they're delivering their lines. In addition to making for more realistic animations, it also offers more believable line-reads, conveying real-world exhaustion or frustration. The Uncharted series has been using this technique since the beginning.

Unfortunately Michael Ironside is over 60 now and the demands of true performance capture were simply not in the cards for the veteran actor. The only decision was to move on, but apparently it was done amicably.

"Michael and Eric met once in the studio," said Beland. "They're both from Toronto, so they have that in common. They had a passing of the goggles, so to speak."

In case you're interested in checking out some more of Eric's work to get your ears used to how Sam will be sounding, you can check out his IMDB page. Flash Gordon as the new Sam Fisher? Sure, why not!
They could have kept the young guy as the physical/stunt performer and kept Ironside on for the dialogue scenes (similar to what was done for Clu in Tron Legacy).

I find this choice by Ubisoft amusing because on my PS2 disc of Splinter Cell there's an "interview" where Sam Fisher discusses Ubisoft's (at the time) anti-mocap philosophy.

That does look amazing; I still wish it was a character other than Fisher, but if the game is that fluid as a final product, I'll give it a rent.

You know, it's weird they made Fisher younger and replaced Ironside yet, from what's seen in the announcement trailer, they also made Victor Coste younger but kept his same voice actor from Conviction. Grimsdóttír looks pretty much the same (except for having longer hair).
