I've never seen an ep of Modern Family, so I have no basis to judge her on other than her awards and accolades.

My kids talk about "One Direction" and I know they are a conglomerate of X-Factor leftovers, but I don't know anything else about them either.

I think I'll record it and watch it later. Not motivated to stay up for this.

As I previously mentioned, I am expecting this to be a total train wreck. Can't wait!

Boy bands are coming back? No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If anyone cares that guy who likes to sing naked Goyte is the musical guest next week.

I had read this somewhere else and JeffTheAlpaca posted this in the Abbey Elliot thread.

Rumors were that Lorne auditioned several ladies over the last few weeks, and Kate McKinnon will be joining the cast tonight...

This girl might replace one of them

Kate McKinnon is joining the cast of “Saturday Night Live.”

She’s also the first openly gay female cast member in the show’s long history.

McKinnon, who cut her teeth on Logo’s “The Big Gay Sketch Show” — produced by Rosie O’Donnell — could make her first appearance as soon as tomorrow night in the “SNL” hosted by “Modern Family” co-star Sofia Vergara, according to Deadline.com.

McKinnon, a trouper in the New York-based Upright Citizens Brigade comedy team, has also been in several one-woman shows including “Disenchanted,” according to reports.

Terry Sweeney was the first gay man to appear on “SNL” as a cast member during the 1985 season — 10 years after the show’s premiere on NBC.

This is gonna be terrible, unless the rest of the SNL cast really steps up performing and it's well written.

Vergara is going to bomb at something like this.

This is going to be a mess...but I'm hoping for lotsa boob and ass shots so this may balance out.

She has been doing television & commercials for decades, I can't believe everyone thinks its going to be a trainwreck. I'm sure she will use some of the exaggerated language barrier schtick, and it will be very funny, but I believe it's very well calculated. This is the first time I've been interested in watching SNL in years.

Okay, she's actually been great so far. I may have miscalculated.

Didn't Wiig say that she would never do Gilly again? At least I remember what was supposed to be the final Gilly appearance.

Along with just about everyone else, I never liked Gilly although I did laugh when the books in Moynahan's lap popped up when Vergara talked about her bosom.

So that was actually a pretty good episode. It started off strong and faded a bit, but it was never terrible.

Skit of the night was Salma and Sofia doing the shampoo commercial. Was that the new girl? Too bad she plays for the other team.

She got a lot of airtime and she was in the opening credits. She looks kind of like Amy Poehler but the jury is out if she will be that good.

How many times did those dudes from One Direction switch sides and places on the stage?

Gilly and the Manuel Ortiz show should be dropped.

Will we see No Angel next week with James Brolin lol?

The fact that Gilly showed up again is to me major confirmation she's leaving after this season, especially after she said she wasn't going to keep doing them again.

She'll do last sketches with all her major "characters".

So Target Lady will be next.

No, you should not drop Manuel Ortiz skits.

Hader always looks like he really enjoys those with his facial expressions.

That was by far the funniest thing to ever happen during a Gilly sketch.

And that happened in what was the worst Gilly sketch of all time.

That was unbelievably irritating. But I guess that's what you have do when you're a boy band that can't dance. Those guys pale in comparison to NSync and Backstreet Boys and oh my god I can't believe I just typed that.

was Jay in any skits this week? I think I saw him at the very beginning? and at the end clapping with everyone else. Thank goodness for closed captioning.

Jay was in the shot for a half a second in the Hunger Games sketch.

it is good for a few chuckles but the dancing gets old.

One of the guys tapped the other guy on the shoulder probably telling him which direction he should go to sing. I blame the record companies for reviving boy bands again

He had a knife in his hand. I think he was looking for Lorne.

"Put me in more sketches!"

Vergara did a good job but her voice just wears on me after a while and I feel like she has very little range.

Pretty funny throughout, but no big standouts for me. I'm a Wiig apologist but Gilly is just terrible.

This show needs more Jason Sudeikis, Jay Pharoh, Andy Samberg and Bill Hader.

I like Wiig a lot. But moreso in movies than SNL.

I still watch it every week on Hulu. But I just don't get excited to see it the way I used to.

I couldn't believe when I saw 1 Direction start. It's like a 90's boy band, just updated to a more modern Nickelodeon/Justin Beiber/Mild Hipster look. Weird.

I must apologize to Ms. Vergara... she was better than I thought. I laughed out loud a few time during this ep. It was pretty good.

I still get a kick out of Bobby's "Drunk Uncle."

And I like Fred Armisen too. But he's way better on Portlandia.

I didn't see the whole episode, but I thought she had two of the funnier bits as the lady berating the girls running the lemonade stand and as Penelope Cruz in the Pantene sketch.

For some reason, Drunk Uncle was especially funny this time.

And I like Fred Armisen too. But he's way better on Portlandia. That's because it's not live and not written just days before it airs. I mean, that's the major hurdle that SNL has that few people seem to point out. Notice how almost all the pre-taped segments are so much better than the live stuff. Recall how derided Tina Fey was as a writer, but now can do no wrong on 30Rock. When you have time to flush out a script and time for performance and editing, it makes all the difference in the world.

While I understand your point, you can't use that as a valid excuse for bad writing and execution on SNL, because doing so means that the entire concept of SNL is fundamentally flawed (and I don't think it is). SNL is intended to be an outlet for the best of comedic talents, precisely because the weekly live format requires writers who can produce tons of funny ideas quickly and performers who can execute with hardly any rehearsal. If, on the whole, it's not really working, it's because the writers and performers aren't quite up to the task, not because of the format itself.

True the late 80's and early 90's cast with Carvey, Hartman, Myers, Sandler, etc will never be replicated.

I find it interesting how many people refer to the early 90s of SNL as being so great, not to mention the years with Ferrell. Most people form those opinions from seeing sketches from the day, which more often than not are either off the site or on a Best of package. What's important to note is that even if they were to watch several sketches at a time from that era, they were all spread out over several seasons. More often than not those single sketches were the only decent bit on the whole show when originally aired, and it's been that way for a while. I remember watching SNL when I was in high school and thinking a lot of the sketches were lame and unfunny, and these were in the Sandler/Hartman years.
