Is 16 gauge enough for my surrounds?

I am running 16 gauge speaker wire for the rear channels. Any opinions on this? I know the heavier the gauge, the better but this is all one place had. Can I use the same for the center channel? I have to make two 35-foot runs with the cable for the surrounds and only a few feet for the center. Any suggestions?

For average home theaters, 16 gauge should be fine if you are using small surrounds and not too powerful of a receiver. However, for a truly great sound you are better off going with the lower gauge. Even though they are unsightly and are hard to hide (a big couch usually helps) you will certainly reap the benefits from the fuller sound. As for your cord lengths, a good rule of thumb is to measure out the exact distance from the receiver to the speaker and add 15%. But you should keep the fronts and the center at the same length, and rear surrounds at the same length. Then you will be sure that the signal reaches the speakers at the right time.
