Weekend Box Office (11/5 - 11/7): Tyler Perry's House of Money

The Tyler Perry-directed film was only expected to gross $20M "but it's performing more on a par with Tyler's other films," an excited Lionsgate exec gushed to me this afternoon. Warner Bros is pleased that its comedy starring Robert Downer Jr and Zach Galifianakis is tracking on the high side of what an "R"-rated buddy comedy will do. This is exactly what The Other Guys starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg fared in this genre over the summer. But Megamind starring Will Ferrell was predicted to gross between $45M and $50M so $42M is on the low side of rival studios' expectations. But distributor Paramount just told me the actual number should go higher: "There are no kids out of school. Looks like mid- to high-40's, right where everyone expected. Won't know better til the evening." A rival studio exec isn't so sure: "I’ve always felt this movie was destined to open in the $40M area, give or take, and I’m not steering away from that now. It has always been alarming to me that my 11-year-old son has no interest in seeing MM as he should be right in the wheelhouse." More analysis tonight.
The Hangover pulled in $44,979,319 on its opening weekend from the summer of 2009. While it's not the busy summer season, Due Date will just do about $10 million shy of Phillips and Galifianakis' last film together. Not bad, but reviews haven't been too appealing either (unlike Hangover which opened to both audience and critical acclaim).
Tyler Perry will never be poor again. For Colored Girls is not a Madea property and doesn't carry the PG-13 like all of his previous films, but the R-rating. So $28 million is more than what anyone else expected. More power to him despite his films still continuing to suck.
I'm sure Red will have another little drop while Saw 3D and Paranormal Activity 2 plummet as Halloween season is over.

For Colored Girls is also supposed to be Perry's best film. It got an NYT Critic's Pick.
127 should be doing well.
And remember, Dragon had amazing legs.

As pointed out, reviews and wom aren't going to be as good as Dragon. It's good for 200m obviously, but given the starpower and superhero storyline, you can't help but think the studio probably had more in mind. It's all about expectations... yeah, many times those are unreasonable, but I don't think so in this case.

Plus, How to Train Your Dragon's opening did underperform, especially coming off the $60 million dollar openings of Kung Fu Panda and Monsters vs Aliens. I think it's a tough call to assume Megamind will follow the same kind of success.

Re: Weekend Box Office (11/5 - 11/7): Tyler Perry's House of Money
My comment was that Dragon did well because of amazing legs (and great WOM). I don't think Megamind will have the same response.
The marketing was really confusing; I still didn't know what the movie was about, or if Megamind was even the villain or the hero.
