A Christmas Carol - 1 Disc and 4 Disc (BD, 3D BD, DC, DVD; $49.99) ----> 11/16/2010
Disney will go down in Blu-ray history as the first studio to announce a true 3D title for general release (not tied to the purchase of certain 3D hardware). On November 16, the studio will release the Robert Zemeckis-directed CGI movie A Christmas Carol, starring a motion-captured Jim Carrey, in two BD editions: a single-disc release, and a 4-disc combo pack, including no fewer than four incarnations of the movie: conventional BD, DVD, digital copy and 3D BD.
Special features include:
* BonusView: Behind the Carol - the full motion capture experience (BD-exclusive)
* Digital Advent Calendar (BD-exclusive)
* Capturing A Christmas Carol
* On Set with Sammi
* Deleted scenes
* Scrooge's Wild Ride (3D BD exclusive)
List price is $39.99 for the single-disc release and $49.99 for the 4-disc combo.

Oh boy, Enjoy guys. If you want the most complete copy you gotta shell out some major coinage for it (especially since 99% of people getting the Combo pack will now get a useless 3D BD which kinda makes the whole idea of the recent Combo packs Disney/Warner/Universal etc having been trying to do useless. It's no longer trying to be a bridge current DVD owners and potential future BD owners, but just general raping).
I Wonder why it's (3D/Normal BD) not on the same disc?

Well, about the 3D version being "useless," I'd actually rather have that than the digital copy or DVD, but that's just me. At least I might use that disc someday.

But aren't 3DBD movies supposed to be backwards compatible with standard BD players (playing back in 2D rather than 3D)? Why the separate disc?

An excuse to raise the MSRP and get more money? I'm baffled by it especially after all the crap we heard about them being on one disc.

3D movies are going to need more disc space to achieve the same quality. Given that the movie and extras will be on one disc, including the 3D version may have been too much. Then again, it's only 98 minutes. We'll see how much space they actually used.
And of course, as Gizmo said, they wouldn't want you to get the 3D version if you don't pony up for the combo set, would they?

Will the 3D BD only work on the 3D BD players? That's the only reasoning behind why it's a separate disc.

So is this actually going to be in 3-d, or is it going to be the same shit that we have seen recently with the 3-d in theaters? Where ticketgoers were charged more for a nonexistant 3-d experience.

Since the whole movie is rendered in CGI, it should look very 3D even at home.

In theaters this was awesome in 3D. In fact, the Zemeckis Christmas movies (this and The Polar Express if that comes out in true 3D) might be enough to push me to get a 3D TV next time they are on sale. I guess I just love movies where it's snowing in 3D.
I guess I'll be getting the four disc. Should hopefully only be $30-$35 when released.

It's possible that the bundle contains old school and new school 3D. After all, the new 3D version is only going to be good for a very small number of customers at first. Of course, then they'd be cramming the equivalent of about 2.5 transfers on one disc, but again it's only 98 minutes so it may not be an issue.

People complained when Monster's Inc was announced as a 4-disc set with a $44.99 MSRP, and most people were able to grab that one for next to nothing....if there is one thing Disney has proven, it is that their inflated MSRPs do not really have a major influence on our true final price....

It is a Disney title....which past releases have shown MSRP to not be a true indicator of what an actual final cost to the consumer will be....chances are there will be a $10 off coupon for the combo pack, and the actual cost will be no more than $20 despite the $50 MSRP.....

I'm surprised this isn't $59.99, actually.
Hey isn't a 3D disc supposed to be readable on a regular Blu-ray player... or is than an authoring option? Is this pack gonna contain two disc playable in a regular BR players?!??

Will the 3D version cure Zemeckis' characters of their zombie-like dead eyes?

I'm with you on the digital copy. I do like the DVD. I for one will not have 3D in my house. No really need too, and I really do not plan too.

Drop the dvd and digital copy with this set. People interested in the 3D presentation probably do not have need for either of those other formats so dump them already. Drop the MSRP to $30 and call it good. Disney is catering to too many groups with this one IMHO.

So I got the retail release of this today. I'll explain how Disney is doing 3D on Blu-ray.
The 4 disc set includes
3D BD
2D BD
DVD
DC
The 3D BD will NOT play in a normal BD player. Period. You need to have a 3D BD Player AND a 3D TV for it to even load. So no 2D playback on it. It also included only 1 Bonus feature (even though it's a 50GB Disc), while the 2D BD has the rest. I guess this is so people won't keep the 3D BD (i.e. they have 1 3D BD player and several other BD players and would sell off the 2D BD). If you don't care about Special Features, and only plan on watching it in 3D, well, you should be happy. This makes sense as a 3D and 2D of the film + Special Features likely wouldn't fit on 1 BD50.

To be honest, I don't think that's a bad way to do it. While I don't necessarily think that disc space is a big issue for many titles, a 3D version is going to be more of a strain on available bandwidth. A 2D title can have bitrate peaks of up to 40Mbps, but with 3D video the bits have to get divided between two images. Granted, there is redundancy in the images, but it's still going to limit the potential quality of a 2D image.
Whether it's actually visually noticeable is a different story, but I'm still not comfortable with a reduction in effective bitrate. Add in possible consumer confusion, and it may indeed be best to use separate discs for 2D and 3D.

The good part is I don't care about 2D or Special Features, so I'll wind up just selling off the 2D BD, DVD and DC. This should work well for these type of releases and likely net me a profit for the 3D releases I do buy (like Despiciable Me).
