Spartacus: Blood and Sand -- "The Red Serpent" -- 01/22/10

Spoiler:
Betrayed by the Romans. Forced into slavery. Reborn as a Gladiator. The classic tale of the Republic’s most infamous rebel comes alive in the graphic and visceral new series, Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Torn from his homeland and the woman he loves, Spartacus is condemned to the brutal world of the arena where blood and death are primetime entertainment. But not all battles are fought upon the sands. Treachery, corruption, and the allure of sensual pleasures will constantly test Spartacus. To survive, he must become more than a man. More than a gladiator. He must become a legend.

Starring Australian actor, Andy Whitfield (McLeod's Daughters) as Spartacus, Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess) as Lucretia, John Hannah (The Mummy, Four Weddings and A Funeral) as Batiatus and Peter Mensah (300, The Incredible Hulk) as Doctore, this unique mix of live action, graphic novel effects and brutal battle sequences is set to make "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" an epic television event.

If you don't have Starz, this series is also going to be available thru Netflix streaming. The first episode is available now.

Starz also has a $25 rebate offer for those who sign up through the end of March. I plan on taking advantage of the offer in anticipation of this show.

It's airing on Encore as well

The first 2 episodes are out there floating around the internet.

I thought the first episode was average. The fight scenes are straight out of 300 and they really amped up the sex and violence to draw people in.

I'm there

read that Starz pretty much let the director cut loose with the sex, gore and nudity, only one scene did Starz thought went a little too far and axed the idea before filming.

I have a Starz/Showtime $12.99 per month combo right now on Directv, so I'm definitely tuning in. I also have Netflix, so when I do cancel, I can still watch it.

It doesnt look that good from the previews, looks really cheap and lots of Green screen that doesnt blend well and trying to copy the style of 300.

The showrunner for this is Steven DeKnight. If some of are familiar with him, he was a writer/producer on Smallville for a number of years.

BTW, Starz already renewed this for a 2nd season before the Pilot even aired.

I saw the pilot. Take it for what it is (loud, sexy, ridiculously violent fun) and you'll probably enjoy it.

just finished streaming "300: The Series" -- opps, I mean "Spartacus." Not feelin this at all. The blood effects were cool at first, but got old quickly. The acting is pretty bad. Atleast the women arent terrible to look at haha

my fingers are crossed that this book

is filmed in min-series form. Tiberius was a total perv, second only to Caligula

Re: Spartacus: Blood and Sand -- "The Red Serpent" -- 01/22/10

I just watched this on Netflix streaming and thought it was pretty good, although probably the last 10-15 minutes were the best.

Yes, it definitely has alot of similarity to 300 and a little bit of Gladiator as well. Lots of green screen and computer animated blood.

There is alot of sex and extremely graphic violence. I do have to say the actress who plays Spartacus' wife is drop dead gorgeous and has a dynamite body.

I have a question:

Spoiler:

Did they mention what happened to Spartacus' wife after he was captured and she was taken away? I think they casually mentioned it when he was on the ship with the other prisoners, but I couldn't hear it clearly.

Got a kick out of the:

Spoiler:

Full frontal nudity/bush shot of Ilithyia, the blonde wife of the General. Interesting that the actress' name is Viva Bianca.

Just found her name. Erin Cummings, who plays Spartacus' wife.

Loving Viva and Erin, don't give a crap about the red-headed Lucy Lawless.

Agreed. My only disagreement was the blood. I didn't feel it from the beginning but I've always hated CG blood. Case in point, the scene when Spartacus saves his wife from those 5 (or so) guys trying to rape her. They all get killed in gruesome ways where blood flies all over the place (even on the camera) yet none spilled on the snow that blanketed the ground?

Add in the stupid 300-esque slow-fast motion fight scenes and I just gave up. I'll give it another shot because the chicks are cute and their boobs are present most of the time, though.
