Sept. 2009: PS3 outsells 360 and Wii (NA)?
Analyst: PlayStation 3 Over Xbox 360 and Wii in September
Matt Peckham
How long since Sony's PlayStation 3 was selling pole position? Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter predicts they've finally grabbed the top slot in North American September hardware sales, reaching 410,000 units or a 76% improvement year-over-year. That's against Nintendo with a projected 390,000 Wii units (down 45% from last year) and Microsoft with a projected 350,000 Xbox 360 units (up 1% year-over-year).
A bright spot everyone can celebrate: In his note, Pachter forecasts September video game software sales of $750 million versus last year's $618 million, a 21% year-over-year upswing, and definitive return to double-digit growth after six months of double-digit declines.
Pachter predicts that September hardware unit sales will be 2,105,000 units--still down by 5% compared to September 2008--but notes the huge uptick over the last five months sales, which were down an average of 19%.
In related news, Sony's Patrick Seybold told Kotaku sales of the PlayStation Portable shot up 300% following the release of the company's new smaller, disc-free PSP Go. The launch also generated a "significant increase in revenue for [the] PlayStation Network, driven by a 200 percent lift in PSP game downloads purchased from [the] PlayStation Store" in North America.
NPD's retail sales report releases next Thursday after market close.

It'll be interesting to see if the NPD numbers match up.

Considering it had an actual price drop (not just shifting units like the 360) and now looks like a Panini press instead of a full sized Foreman Grill this comes as no surprise.

I find it amusing that all the people who predicted there would be droves of people out to buy the new machine b/c of the price drop and redesign were pretty much wrong. Sure, it got a bump, but nothing to write home about. In fact, I think those sales numbers are pretty pathetic considering the price dropped so much.

With Uncharted 2 coming out this month, I suspect the good times will continue to roll into October.

Just looked him up. Looks like he's right a fair amount, but also misses quite a bit and tends to overestimate Sony products. For instance, for March 2008 he announced that the PS3 had outsold the 360 for the month, approximately 365,000 units to 310,000. Released the following week, actual sales numbers were PS3: 257,000; Xbox 360: 262,000.

It seems to be working. I hadn't turned on my PSP for probably close to a year (whenever Crisis Core came out) and just did to update the software and check out the new store. I almost downloaded Persona but decided that I'd rather give Target or BB my money than Sony direct.

200% increase in downloaded PSP games is also joke considering they released 90% of the available PSP games for download last week. I mean, how many people here bought a PSP downloadable game before this week? And the only reason I bought this week was due to the NIS sale.

And you're assuming Michael Pachter's predicted numbers are accurate?!?

I'm not so sure; I could swear software releases rarely resulted in large increases in actual system sales for the PS3.

Nope, never really does. There is a gif out there that shows all the games that were supposed to 'save' the PS3. It keeps getting more titles added to it.

Sony haters are out in full force today. You'd have to be looking through very green lenses to see this as "bad" news...but amazing that some folks can.
Sony has a bit of momentum, and that is ultimately good for everybody.

It's very bad news. $100 price drop on something many people said would be "flying off the shelves" to only sell 60k more than a year older Xbox 360? Bad news.

So $123MM in sales this month.
And $140MM in sales the month previous.
Year-over-year, $123MM sales this month, compared to $70MM sales this month last year.

Not this shit again. Just because someone doesn't think that these estimated sales figures are a huge success, they're Sony haters? Ugh. I think I gave perfectly good reasons how this could easily be interpreted as just average.
Wasn't the Wii price drop the last Sunday of September? Probably not really enough days to make an impact. And the 360 Elite just dropped to the price of a Pro, which probably isn't a big enough change to affect most consumers.

i really need to go back and find that ps3 thread with the slim. find some of the posts. here we go.
pretty good call here: http://forum.dvdtalk.com/9645192-post23.html
Probably the best post in the entire thread: http://forum.dvdtalk.com/9646180-post33.html
Apparently there won't be a drastic change in sales numbers as some had predicted.

Re: Sept. 2009: PS3 outsells 360 and Wii (NA)?
The Wii was always 200 dollars and never got a price drop
the 360 pro was always 250 and was never 300, and the elite was always 300, it was never 400...
Seriously though, look at the 360 dropping 100 bucks.... According to some in this thread a 100 dollar price drop is why the ps3 sold such "meager" numbers. Seems the 360 elite had a 100 dollar price drop too with less numbers.
Logic is a good thing if people use it.
I understand that the numbers aren't official yet, but come on. With the way the ps3 has been going, this is huge for them. Can't people just say "Wow, I'm glad we have another system competing now, hopefully this means that the games will just get better" instead of "Those number are not good.. 360 this, wii that. Why take sides take sides in little console wars like this, why can't people see that all the consoles are good in their own way, if they weren't then they would just die. 3do, jaguar, 32x, sega cd, etc.
I love my ps3, I also love my wii, and I loved my 360 (before it red ringed >.
