ok, if my dvd player has a DD decoder and it has 6 outputs for speakers, does that mean i can just buy 2 bookshelf speakers and connect them to the OUTPUT of the left and right channels of the dvd player?

or do those outputs go to a reciever and THEN to speakers?

im not exactly sure how all this 5.1 works because i cant afford it and dont have my own house yet.

Yes, it must go thru an amplifier (receiver) before a speaker can use the signal.

ok thanks,

wait one more question,

if i get a receiver with DD decoding, does my dvd player need a decoder at all?
or should i just get a plain dvd?

or get a dvd player with DD decoding and just a receiver?

if you have a decoder in your receiver than you do not need a decoder in your dvd player. So just get a plain dvd player. It is better to have to decoder in the receiver than in the dvd player IMO

Don't forget about DTS... You may want this now or in the future... Make sure your receiver has a DTS decoder and that your DVD player can pass the DTS stream...
