Noyce onboard for 'Blood' remake
Director to develop pirate pic for Warner Bros.
By DAVE MCNARY

Phillip Noyce has come onboard to develop a remake of the classic swashbuckler "Captain Blood" for Warner Bros. with an eye toward directing. Warner is developing "Captain Blood" as a possible U.K./Australian co-production. Bill Gerber is producing.

Errol Flynn starred in the 1935 original, directed by Michael Curtiz, as a doctor wrongly sentenced to slavery in the Caribbean, where he and his comrades become avenging pirates. It was nominated for the best picture Oscar.

Noyce has also been attached to direct "Edwin A. Salt," the Kurt Wimmer-scripted thriller that Columbia Pictures has been developing.

Captain Blood was (and still is) a GREAT movie. If you look at the style, dialogue, direction, and acting it looks more like a movie made in 1940 or 1945 than a movie made in 1935.

Casting the lead will be the big trick. Errol Flynn was absolutely perfect as Captain Blood. I'd hate to be the actor compared to that particular Flynn performance...

I loved this movie when I watched it on TCM. I also agree with the above post that the casting of the lead will be the big challenge.

I can already hear dimwitted teenagers complaining, "Can you believe how much they copied from Pirates of the Caribbean. Blood's relationship with Arabella is a straight knock-off of Will and Elizabeth. And the way he escapes and steals a ship during a pirate raid -- can't they think of something original?"
