Stanley Kubrick Boxed Colllections
I have been a huge fan of Mr. Kubrick's work since I was young. Starting with "The Shining", then becoming old enough for someone to show me "A Clockwork Orange" (apparently 12 is old enough), to his final film, "Eyes Wide Shut". I love all his films and he is the reason why I'm studying to become a cinematographer. So when I recently found out that a box set full of remastered versions of all his films had been released, you can imagen my excitement.
I am asking for some insight from people who have either one or both of Kubrick's box sets (the 2001 and 2008 sets [I understand that there is a third one, however the reviews for the 2000 collection do not seem favorable]). So I have a few questions that I hope can be answered.
First; The reviews for the 2001 box set (the blue and black colored box), are confusing when the subject of "wide screen" and "transfer" are mentioned. So, are all the movies (giving special attention to "Full Metal Jacket") in wide screen? And are all the transfers "respectable"?
Second; Granted, it's just a matter of opinion and the answer maybe obvious, however I feel it should be asked. Which set is better? And by "better", I mean which set offers the most? The best transfer? Extra features? Etc.?
I thank anyone who reads this and anyone who replies. I greatly appreciate your help. Thank you once again.

The older set features The Shining, Full Metal Jacket and perhaps others (I am not positive) in full screen because there was a dispute as to what Kubrick wanted his films to look like on home video. I think he wanted the picture to fill the frame and not be matted like it is in theaters, but Kubrick was not around for the advent of widescreen HDTVs.
Since I commonly see the older box running about $100 (probably less, though, now that the new one has come out), I would say the new box is the better value. You get widescreen transfers, better ones, plus slews of bonus features. You will of course have to purchase Barry Lyndon, Lolita and Dr. Strangelove separately, but the new box is still the easier-to-access, higher quality option.

This isn't an answer to the question, but the new box set looks very cool, and I absolutely love the covers. It would be incredible if they would release the rest of his films in this same style, with matching style covers, I think. Very cool idea.
