Will tv series be released earlier because of the shortened season?

I can't see them waiting till September to release 10-15 shows unless the networks plan on milking the reruns till then.

Im curious too, especially Lost if it has 8 episodes...

Doubtful. The DVD releases are usually to pump people up for new seasons.

Agreed. If anything the strike will delay DVD releases if it goes on long enough that next season starts late.

I've been wondering this too. I think they should so people can get caught up in advance and be ready for the new season when it starts. They don't give people enough time when they release them a week or two before the new season starts.

Could the strike also affect the content (featurettes, documentaries) of DVD sets as well? Some of that stuff has to be written too, doesn't it?

It's all boilerplate. They just swap the scripts around from one show to another.

Is this season officially cancelled, or is there a chance they will make more episodes if the strike ends soon?

I am pissed because this is the first season in a long time with a good crop of science fiction shows - and they strike now.
