The Most Pretentious and Overrated New Bands/Artists
Oh there are so many.
For one, The Click Five, and Boys like Girls. I find these two bands so generic and so 'Ashlee Simpson' by their very nature, that its hard to even remotely accept them as 'rock artists'.
I also do not like 50 Cent, and oh yeah, that song that Jimmy Kimmel danced to at the AMAs by 'Souljaboy'? THAT is the song that topped the Billboard Hot 100 for weeks? What is going ON!!

Any of those shitty 3 note emo bands, that try to make people think that they're "punk rock" Also, any band that is more about image then the quality of the music.

Hardcore punk, now commonly known as hardcore, is a subgenre of punk rock that originated in North America in the late 1970s. In North America, hardcore punk emerged with a new sound, which was generally thicker, heavier, and faster than standard punk rock. It is sometimes characterized by short, loud, and passionate songs about serious topics such as government, capitalism, anarchism, war, and the hardcore subculture itself.

The Bravery - the critics loves 'em but I hates 'em
British Sea Power - a couple of great songs do not make up for the most annoyingly mannered vocalist in rock history.
Joanna Newsom - Mom: "Johnny, stop torturing that cat! I can hear it screaming! Now stop torturing it!"
Johnny: "Mom, I'm just playing the new Joanna Newsom record."
Mom: "Oh."

Not always the case, but bands with no sense of humor bug me.

But none of these people are overrated or pretentious, are they? Maybe 50 Cent on his first album, but after that, he's been far from a critics darling. And Soulja Boy? That's just pop/rap music for teens - nothing pretentious about that. May not be good music, but not guilty of what you're describing.
I find a lot of bands pretentious, but none more than The White Stripes. I still enjoy their music though.

For some reason, I find the band name Clap Your Hands Say Yeah to be very pretentious. Not sure about the music, but the name rubs me the wrong way somehow.
