Wil Wheaton's Keynote address at PAX

For your clicking convenience

It's long but I think its worth the time.

As a gamer only a few years younger than the former Wesley Crusher, I found his speech to be a rare celebration of all the geek culture I revel in and indeed have reveled in for the past 25 years of my life or so. Cheezy? Maybe a little. But if you're up for a nostagia kick along with a bit of common sense and political commentary (at it pertains to video games) I think you'll enjoy it.

God I have to get to PAX some year. Sounds like such a blast.

It was enjoyable. He's about 4 years older than me, so we had similar experiences. I first had a 2600, then a NES. I wasn't as obsessed with games as he was though and really didn't like arcades much -- I actually prefered console gaming.

I enjoyed this earlier in the week. I felt he made some very compelling points through his story telling. I'm not anti-cursing or anything, but some of his cursing seemed over the top for the event. I attribute this to his desire to quickly disconnect himself from most peoples perceptions of him as "Wesley". Regardless, well worth a listen and kudos for such an engaging speech.

I made it about five or so minutes in and had to shut it off because it was so annoying, it sounded like he was reading posts from the Halo 2 message board at GameFAQs. Way to prove to Jack Thompson that video games aren't for pre-pubescent boys, Wil.

He was talking about his youth. If you made it more than five minutes he makes it interesting. It's about an hour long, give it another go.

He has a couple kids and he gets into it about being a responsible parent and how he doesn't need help from the government parenting his kids. The usual fare but still interesting.

I went to PAX this year and the whole thing was awesome. And Pixy, the opener I think was just to get ahold of the crowd. The average age there was about 20 IMO
