What would you play for PRIDE?
Hey,
I'm DJing a gay pride party, and I've been told to play whatever I want, but just o keep it fun. Since i know the other DJs are gonna be doing new electro/house and old 70s disco, I wanna target the early 90s. I want it to be gay and fun and bouncy, but I was born a tad too late to really appreciate this period, so I only know the real mainstream stuff.. Any tips?
I'm thinking things like:
Crystal Waters - Gypsy Woman
Technotronic - Pump Up the Jam
Snap! - The Power
and new-old stuff is good, like Surkin - Radio Fireworks, or Bobmo - Home Alone, or Para One - Midnight Swim (Surkin Remix)
If you have any tips for stuff that's really open, kinda ravey, kinda diva, with bouncy keys and stuff, lemme know!
Thanks

Dannii Minogue ("So Under Pressure", came out last year but sounds straight out of 1992. Absolutely love it)
Madonna ("Erotica" and "Deeper And Deeper" definately from 92)
George Michael ("Too Funky" from 1992, not a huge fan of his 90's material, but this song holds up)
Corina ("Temptation" from 1991)
Black Box (pretty much the entire Dreamland album from 1990, had several hits)
Janet Jackson ("Throb" from 1993, the most housey thing she's ever done without being remixed)
and even tho it's cliche and I can't stomach it, no early 90's-themed gay pride party is complete without Right Said Fred's "I'm Too Sexy".

I would mix it up a bit and play some tunes people may not expect but still keep it dancable.
The Chemical Brothers
The B-52's ("52 Girls", "Rock Lobster", "Stobe Light")
The Crystal Method
Curve
The Gossip (songs such as "Standing in the Way of Contol", "Fire with Fire", "Listen Up!")
Blondie (re-mixes)
Garbage (re-mixes)
Meat Beat Manifesto
Love and Rockets
Pizzicato Five
The Wolfgang Press

I'd definitely recommend the Pet Shop Boys. Very and Disco2 (remixes from the Very album) are from the early '90s if it absolutely need be from that era. Otherwise, any Pet Shop Boys is really good for the event.
Also would recomment Lords Of Acid, a house/industrial group whose lyrics were trashy fun (song titles include "Rough Sex", "Spacy Bitch", "Mister Machoman" and my favorite "Pump My Body To The Top" ). Their Lust and Voodoo-U albums are early 90s as well.

Kate Ryan is excellent, but she's only been around since the early 2000's, I believe. So I don't know if that would work with your oeuvre or not.

Hey thanks guys, there's a lotta stuff that I don't even know so I should get onto my research. If I could I'd play new stuff like Justice and Hot Chip all night, but the organizer told me to stay away from that and bring out the divas. I'll mix it up as much as I can, these are really good song tips!

thismeansyou85: If you gotta stick with the "Divas", go with cool ones like Shirley Manson (Garbage), Debbie Harry, and I still think you could get away with The Gossip since Beth Ditto has a power-house voice. Check out their latest CD "Standing in the Way of Control" since there are at least four dancy songs on it.
