Friday Night Lights--'Pilot'--10/03/2006
Spoiler:
Looking forward to it. The TiVo is set, although I'll probably be watching Veronica Mars live, and this later.

I'm that this lives up the hype it's been getting.
I've already seen the pilot and it's good, I wouldn't say it's the best pilot I've ever seen, but it was good. I'm not a fan of football at all.. so this is going to really have to keep my attention.
I'm a huge fan of Kyle Chandler's and he deserves a good show.

I'm interested in the show, but when was the last time a high school centered show lasted on a major network? I mean Fox, the WB, and UPN have had them. And maybe Fox is a major network now (at least when American Idol is on). But NBC, CBS, or ABC airing a high school show? It seems everytime they try the show gets canned in a season or two.

Anyway, I can't wait to watch the pilot. It's been getting some pretty good reviews.

How is this series going to work? Are the seasons going to advance real years? If so..the main 'stars' will be gone in 1-3 years.
Or is just every season...the same football season or whatever?

How many games are there in a normal high-school season? It would be interesting if each episode concentrated on a separate game with all the sub-plots just interweaving throughout. This would help to minimize the number of non-football storylines that I can see happening (an episode just about the winter formal, anyone?) and focus the show instead on what it's really about.

I guess they'll be devoting 2 or 3 episodes per game then. Maybe for one episode, the team will have a scrimmage game against the local juvenile penitentiary (who, of course, just happen to be coached by The Rock).

the layout for each episode of two-a-days (the reality high school football show on MTV) is basically:
first 3/4 - leadup to the game - practice, interactions with girlfriends and parents, some cheerleader scenes, etc.
last 1/4 - highlights from actual game on friday night
i'd assume this same kind of layout would work for friday night lights.

Reviews have been terrific, especially the NYTimes, I don't recall a times TV review quite as good as this one in a long time.
Looking forward to it.

How do you do that with friday night lights? I recognize some of the kids, so I dont think they are going to keep them for 1-2 years..then reshuffle and only keep the local town folk and coaches?

Also remember that if sophomores on the team get to play, that gives those characters 3 years on the show (it's extremely unlikely freshman would get to play anything but tackling dummies in their freshmen year), and juniors would get 2 seasons on the show if they did one football season per show season, which is the most reasonable route to go.

Man, what a let down. With the exception of Studio 60 I expected this to be the best new show this season and what a complete steaming pile of unoriginal crap. I will give it two more episodes and I am out. From what I can tell it didn't take more than about 3.5 hours to write this pilot episode. 3 hours to watch Varisty Blues and Friday Night Lights (the movie) and then 5 minutes to rename all the characters and 25 minutes trying to convice Mack Brown to make a cameo.
What an uninspired, cliched, shallow, unoriginal turd.
