Sopranos Season 6, part 1 has been delayed on Hd-dvd. No new release date given.

So, this *was* true?:

I guess SDDS does not count since it is not Dolby. SDDS is 7.1 or 9.1, right? I can't remember which.

It's 7.1, but the extra channels are in the front (mid-left and -right) instead of the back.

Yep, you were correct about the Sopranos. I got the info of Themanroom.com. Apologies. :)

That list though is being debated over on AVS right now. If you do a search for HD-dvd you will notice a lot of odd things, such as many recalled titles and cancelled titles that have been released.

From Robert Harris on HTF:

"Word has been leaked that Warner has plans to release new HD transfers of the 1962 Mutiny on the Bounty, a 65mm anamorphic production, as well as Forbidden Planet (CinemaScope) in November.

Apparently additional unused footage has been found and may appear as an extra for FP.

BD discs will follow in early 2007.
Wow, Forbidden Planet is a must buy.

Just FYI, amazon shipped out my order for The Break Up today, a week early. Not sure why, this is the first of about a dozen orders that shipped early.

Edit: I also just noticed that they shipped it regular mail, instead of my 2 day prime shipping, that sucks. I'll give them a call later today about that.

have to admit I haven't seen Mutiny on the Bounty but noted over at imdb that the film's aspect ratio is 2.76:1 - that's one w--i--d--e movie

Is it a Universal title? I noticed my Best Buy has been putting all the Universal titles out one week early for some odd reason.

Casino! Awesome.
I've avoided the DVD-18 version for some time so it will be nice to get it on a single sided HD DVD.

My Fast Times at Ridgemont High disc shipped from Amazon, but nothing so far on Batman. I'm really getting fed up with Amazon not being able to ship the Warner discs in a reasonable amount of time. If Target has it and some of the other movies today I will cancel my Amazon order.

Still nothing for me today. I bought Polar Express at Target, but talked myself out of the last copy of Batman. Guess I will give it a few more days. I want the lower Amazon price, but hate waiting so long for them to ship. They didn't have either of the Wonka movies at Target.

BTW, the Target guy back in video was shocked at the sales of HD DVD today. He is skeptical of both formats and didn't think they would sell any of them. They sold 3 copies of Batman, 3 of Polar Express, 2 each of the 2 Fast 2 Furious movies and one of several of the other titles. The HD DVD section is already looking half empty compared to the very full Blu-ray side.

V For Vendetta (with In-Movie Experience!)
Excalibur
Under Seige

For Blu-ray on Oct. 31st:
Phantom of the Opera
Unforgiven

All titles carry a $28.99 SRP.

Here's the official text:
Burbank, California (October 10, 2006) – On October 31, Warner Home Video will release seven new high definition titles. Making their debuts are V for Vendetta and Excalibur on HD DVD and The Phantom of the Opera, The Searchers and Unforgiven on Blu-ray Disc. Under Siege will be making a simultaneous debut on HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc.

The IME for V for Vendetta features the Director's Notebook: Reimagining a Cult Classic for the 21st Century.

Both HD DVD and Blu-ray titles will be available for $28.99 SRP. All bonus materials on the Standard Definition versions of these titles will be included on the HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc versions.

One of my local Targets finished their setup today. Looked like they got 2 copies of each HD DVD movie, with 3 sold....all to me. :) Of the newest ones, they had Batman Begins, Polar Express, Fast and the Furious 1 & 2, and Troy. Everything else was old releases. Still good to see them finally on board and selling them at a cheaper price than BB and CC. I just hope their selection will match the other 2 stores eventually.

2001 will be amazing in HD. I'm just wondering how Maltese Falcon will be handled. I want the other two movies included in the new set, but that may be too much to hope for on the HD DVD release. I'm also wondering how Maltese Falcon will be handled. Given the recent Superman issues, I doubt we'll get all three movies in HD. It's possible they'll fit the other two versions in SD on one disc with the HD movie and the other SD special features (that's how I'm hoping they'll handle it). But more than likely, we won't get the other two versions. That's my guess.

There's not a problem with the combos themselves. it's the amount they charge.

Fortunately, you can get them for as low as $23 at some places. It was addressed last night but clearly MS/Toshiba have nothing to do with the pricing.

The problem with Kong is the dvd itself sold millions and millions of copies. And they are packaging the HD DVD with the 360 add-on, so anyone that buys that is buying it for HD content. Just seems odd to make this a combo when there's a helluva lot of people who already own the dvd version.

Why wasn't Batman Begins a combo?

Actually, not only is it going to be a top-of-the-line demo for HD DVD, it will also show those who might just have a passing interest in HD DVD that "hey, we can do this too! BD can't." Believe it or not, i've heard J6P's commenting on what a great option it is.

The logic behind these is that the studio thinks you might want a standard copy of the movie should you travel and have a portable player (Since there are no HD portables yet). It has little to do with customers they are hoping "might" buy an HD player down the road. Either way, I agree it's a pretty lame idea...the only GOOD use for them is if the format itself dies -- then at least you'll have a standard version. :)

I actually like the idea of the combo for the portability factor, since I won't be able to enjoy any of the newer releases on the road for a while now. Plus, so many rooms in my house have TV/DVD's it would be nice to play it in those as well. Unless, of course, I want to buy a $3000 laptop or spend the same for an eventual portable player.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I like the idea of combos (because you can play them in other rooms, the car, whatever). I actually don't mind the extra $5 or whatever, since I have the existing DVD usually anyway and can just trade it in to recoup that cost.

What gets me is the inconsistency of it. I see no pattern to how Universal (for example) is putting these things out. Either do it, or don't. :)

I pay a premium for, say, Fast Times at Ridgemont High... but I don't for The Thing? Makes no sense.

Ultimately, I'm ambivalent. The extra few bucks won't kill me, but it's not a feature I'd use often, so I wouldn't mind if it went away. The main benefit (for me) would be for titles that my wife loves or that are good family/children films. Those would definitely benefit from not being locked to my only HD display.

I'm already paying about triple for HD DVDs versus what I paid for DVDs ($18 vs. $6).

Yes, I'd buy them if they were the same price as regular HD DVDs, but I wouldn't like it: I'd rather have the artwork on the top of the disc. But this business of trying to force us to buy a combo, when all most of us want is HD DVD, really annoys me.

So far I don't have a single one and have no plans to buy any in the future.

We spend so much time discussing relative player costs and tend to ignore the fact that many (most?) of us have spent far more on DVDs than we have on DVD players. The same will be true for HD DVD/BD.

The studios ought to release both combo and HD DVD only versions and let us vote with our wallets. I think that would set them straight in short order.

What a day. I took the advice of emailing Amazon about my HD DVDs taking so long to ship yesterday. I get a response late yesterday that the reason they take so long is because I'm using super saver shipping. They are the lowest priority and get shipped out of the warehouse last.

That's the exact same response I got.

Funny, I've been using Super Saver Shipping for a loooong time and have never had any issues with the actual shipping times. Delivery times take a bit longer, but the titles have always shipped out promptly. Now they're telling me that my 10/10 releases won't ship out until 10/15 and that is 'normal' for this method. Strange.

And I've yet to have any issues with a Super Saver order that contained no HD DVDs.

And, as you mention, I've also had shipping issues with HD DVD orders while using the Prime trial.

The issue is clearly with HD DVDs. But they choose to ignore it and blame the cheap shipping method. Nice.

My guess would be that unlike regualr DVD's that likely are stocked in regional distro centers, the HD discs are probably coming from the same center for all orders. That would definitely slow it down. They may also be taking better inventory contorl measures with these discs to ensure accurate sales data.

I emailed them again and kind of made a point about the fact my regular DVDs have no delays with super saver. I also made me feelings pretty well known that I didn't appreciate them changing my shipping and charging me for it without asking. I again asked why this is only happening with HD DVDs.

I doubt I will get an answer, but maybe if we beat them up enough they will fix these shipping issues.

I'm glad The Breakfast Club and The Deer Hunter are coming.

Could the reason for the possible delay on the Weinstein titles be that they're supporting Blu-Ray, and they want to release both formats on the same day? Are they supporting BD at all? What I read was inconclusive.

Doesn't sound like it....this was from a thread over at AVSForum:

Basically Genius is owned by Weinstein, and Genius never proclaimed HD DVD exclusivity.

Similarly, Weinstein HAS declared themselves in favour of HD DVD and have not reversed this.

Forbidden Planet' will be a first title ever to hit either next-gen format in a deluxe collector's box set. Billed as the "Ultimate Anniversary Edition," Warner will package the title in a "stunning metal case" that includes the HD DVD, a collectible Robby the Robot replica with moveable limbs, 'Forbidden Planet' and 'The Invisible Boy' reproduction lobby cards portfolio, as well as a 'Forbidden Planet' original theatrical poster mail-in offer.

Just read this and found it intresting. Although I know most people want "just the movie", I'm glad to see WB offering all the extra stuff to HD DVD collectors now. Woohoo, sweet news!! Smallville season 5 rocked, by far the best season to date and I am all over this sucker. Was lucky enough to be able to return my SD set as it was still sealed and Target gives you 90 days to return stuff. I dont know about most people but I buy everything that I can at Target just for that 90 day return policy, it absolutly rocks and is 3 times longer than CC and Best Buy as for most other places. Other titles I was able to trade in unopened were Batman Begins, Corpse Bride, Shawshank 2 disc, Smallville Season 5 and a few others. Nothing btter than being able to basically trade your SD version for a HD version. Has there been an announcment for how many discs this set will be? I figured it would be like 4.

Details on WTC:

In addition to all the same extras as the standard def DVD version, including two audio commentaries with Oliver Stone and the real-life 9/11 survivors depicted in the film and nine deleted scenes, bonus HD content exclusive to both the Blu-ray and HD DVD versions boasts four featurettes, a still gallery, a theatrical trailer and TV spots.

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Paramount/BD-50/Exclusive_HD_Content/Disc_Announcements/Paramount_Adds_HD_Exclusives_to_World_Trade_Center/321

For the BD version, the main feature will be on a BD50 with all the extras on a second BD25. Talk about overkill - the feature technically run at over 50Mbps if spec permitted such. I wonder what they have in store for all that space.

Mr. Cinema
10-23-06, 04:00 PM
So does this mean that 50 gig of space isn't enough for the above or did Paramount just choose to make a 2-discer?

10-23-06, 04:16 PM
So does this mean that 50 gig of space isn't enough for the above or did Paramount just choose to make a 2-discer?

Paramount is doing something interesting, but I'm not sure what. Tears of the Sun is a few minutes shorter, but has excellent PQ, deleted scenes, and two PCM tracks. So Paramount is either doing rediculously (and unnecessarily) high video bit rate, or something they haven't announced yet.

You know, I really can't think of any good reason for Paramount to do this. Its highly unnecessarily for what they have announced so far.

Mr. Cinema
10-23-06, 04:23 PM
It is strange. Paramount probably made the fewest 2-disc sets on dvd and so far, they are the only ones putting out 2-disc sets on the hd formats. But I don't consider that a bad thing. I'd rather have the movie get a disc all to itself and maxed out in terms of specs.

DthRdrX
10-23-06, 04:31 PM
I've been wondering what the hell Paramount was doing with that situation since I saw the pictures of the artwork 1-2 weeks ago. I'm going to guess it's exactly what Josh said: High bitrate on the BD50 and the second disc will be extras, identical to the HD-dvd 2nd disc. If this happens it would be a good candidate to compare across formats.

The other possibility is maybe the coverart was already done before they knew they would use BD50? They just didn't change it?

RockStrongo

Definately...odd move, but it might be a good one...lets see what happens.

I dont care about multiple discs if quality is the issue. Same for hd-dvd.

This disc will be an interesting comparison. In this case, BD has the chance to boast better pic/audio quality (if space is really an issue), but will it??

Drexl
10-23-06, 06:42 PM
Maybe they're using 30GB for each version's first disc (which would require a BD50 for the BD version), and 25GB for the second discs, with the same content on each format.

joshd2012
10-23-06, 06:57 PM
That still wouldn't make sense. 30GB VC-1 just for the movie is overkill. I think they have something up their sleeve they haven't talked about yet.

Yeah, if BD is going to look amazing this should be the release. Sony continues to say that MPEG2 is the better codec because on a BD50 they can push the bitrate. This should be the release to prove it. If it really does outshine the HD DVD then it will be a major bonus for BD. Especially if they can start putting all their movies on them.

They could sell a lot of people on Blu-ray with this release.

Rumor Time.

According to sources close to marketing at ABC, the network is very close to announcing the release of LOST Season One in Blu-Ray format. The set will be the flagship of a line of HDTV enhanced boxed sets the network plans to release in the coming summer. The LOST set will feature extras and extended scenes not included on the highly successful DVD release.

The set, which is rumored to be priced at a whopping $199.99, may not be the norm for future ABC releases citing a daunting price as a possible stumbling block for consumers. The network has plans to release other shows in two episode disks for around $20. If you’re doing your math, that would mean collectors would pay an addition $280 to spread out the pain.

Eric D.
10-26-06, 02:17 AM
Yep, I read that about Lost earlier today. It's a very, very poor move if BD decides to go for that $200 price tag and then put out other shows with only two episodes per discs at $20 each. And people were bitching about The Sopranos HD DVD being too expensive.

PornoStar
10-26-06, 02:43 AM
Oh my god. There is so much wrong with this that I cannot even believe that this isnt some kind of joke. 200 bucks for a season of TV and here I was ripping on HBO for charging 80. I am without a doubt 100% convinced from this point out that the people at BD literally shouldnt be working in this business and there are people on this website that would do a much better job at running that outfit. A rediculous price point combined with the fact that they are thinking about breaking up TV seasons to be sold on multiple episode discs has really boggled my mind.

I see questionable moves made all the time by studios but this without a doubt takes the cake as the single, most idiotic, self defeating move ever made. As soon as the general population sees a 200 dollar price tag on a season of Lost, well you can throw in the towel for BD at that point and if they end up releasing stuff on HD-DVD with that same price point the same could be said for that as well. The single worst thing the studios can do is to start charging rediculous prices for content, it will without a doubt be the one move that will sink these formats.

Still cant believe they are planning on doing this, These people who make these decisions need to wake up real fast before they do some irrepairable damage to these new formats. SD DVD is just too cheap and is just way too big of a powerhouse to think you can get away with prices like these. God help us all!

PS..

MrChaos
10-26-06, 05:46 AM
I suppose the people at ABC think if BR supporters can afford 1K+ players, they must have oodles of money sitting around to spend on $199.99 TV shows! Not me personally.

Only thing I might even possibly consider paying that high for would be the whole SW saga on BR.

darkside
10-26-06, 06:08 AM
I never pay more than $40 for a season of TV and rarely more than $30. Guess what studios, that isn't changing with the HD formats. They can release all the $200 box sets they want. I have no problem either buying the cheap SD sets or just recording all the shows myself in HD.

There's got to be something wrong with that rumored Lost price. $200? The standard DVD retails for $60. That's more than 3x the price.

Even $100 is borderline insane. They'd have to invent a whole new word to describe the $200 price point.

I'd almost rather that the studios held back on TV releases rather than do this. Sopranos at $130, Smallville at $80, Lost at $200 (!) Those kinds of price tags are going to scare people away from HD/BD in general. Not to mention that in the case of Smallville and Lost, most of the target audience would be rebuying something they already own. That makes the price tag ($80, $200, whatever) all the more difficult to swallow.

Yeah, that's not an attractive price at all. I've been spoiled by 8-15 dollar DVDs, and 12-30 buck seasons; 100-200 for a whole series is reasonable. If it's a release where the show does benefit from HD a/v, and they do it right, I could see it being worth a little more, but not 200 bucks a season--especially when it was shown on HD, so they shouldn't have to do any tricky upgrading or whatever [i'm assuming],
