Rent ----> 2/28/06 (tentatively)
Thedigitalbits.com is reporting that Sony is planning to release Rent on Feb. 28th.

Also... this has yet to be announced (consider it Rumor Mill worthy until it is), but we're hearing that Sony is tentatively planning to release its film version of Rent on 2/28 as well.

If it's true, DAY-UMMMMMMM that was fast.
Although given Sony's track record, I have a feeling that this will be a "slimmed-down" version and the SE version will be released six months later. They can use the song from the movie Team America as part of the new "nickname" trend for the SE.

Can't wait for this, although I was surprised it didn't do a little better at the box office. I thought the ad campaign on tv was excellent and the trailers were really fun and emotional at the same time. *shrugs*

This is great news for my wife....she really wants to see this and catching it at the theater isn't going to happen for us.

I hope they do have some good extras on it, like some of the deleted songs.
And HOPEFULLY, Sony will start putting the original trailers on the DVD! I don't wanna buy Bewitched just so I can have the Memoirs of a Geisha trailer.

However, that seems to be the trend now. Waiting... comes out in four weeks, but it's features weren't announced until the end of December. Serenity wasn't announced until early November for a mid-Decemeber release date. And so on and so on.

Really wish I caught this in theaters now but oh well. Critics didn't seem to like it even though it has been a while since a good musical has come out. Hell, I even got out to go see Phantom of the Opera despite how trashed that got and that wasn't so good so maybe I was wiser this year.

Granted, Rent as a film is different than the original musical, but it is a change that works on film. The stage version is a complete rock opera, but the film is more of a drama with musical interludes (which makes more sense considering rock operas don't transition over to film that well). The changes Columbus and company seemed to make might've sounded drastic, but they work all the better. The only thing I could've asked for was that the film would've been better if more work placed on the film's editing.

It's available as a stand alone Special Edition DVD ($20.27) or on a double feature DVD ($25.87)with "Godspell" or "Tommy", according to CD Universe.
