Best Seinfeld season for noob?
I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but I've never really seen a full Seinfeld episode. By the time it was over with in 1998, I was just 12, quite too young to get into it/appreciate it.... and I've never sat through a re-run. But I have a chance to get a season for free through DDD's B1G1 free thing..... season 1/2, the start, season 3, or the breakthrough season 4?

Definitely NOT Season 1 and 2 because they were still trying to get 'the feel' of the show. Season 3 is where it really starts to get good. "The Pez Dispenser" and "The Nose Job" are two fantastic season 3 episodes. But I think you already answered your own question by referring to season 4 as 'the breakthrough season'. Season 4 has arguably the three best episodes of the entire series... "The Junior Mint", "The Pick", and "The Contest". In addition, season 4 has several other very strong classic episodes.
So, my long-winded answer is Season 4.
P.S. I envy you - getting to see some of these great shows for the first time.

Season four is probably the strongest, but it does sort of benefit from having known what came before.
Season 1 - Is actually pretty mediocre by any stretch. Even at only five episodes, it can be tough to get through.
Season 2 - By this time, the characters were starting to come into their own. Highlights would be "The Jacket" and "The Chinese Restaurant." There's a pretty even mix good eps and forgettable eps.
Season 3 - This is where everyone knew what they were doing. The writers, the actors, the characters, the directors. Everything started clicking. Lots of classic episodes here: The Pen, The Parking Garage, The Red Dot, The Subway, The Pez Dispenser, The Parking Space, The Limo.
Season 4 - Is where everything gelled. Just one great episode after another, with a strong sense of arc running through the season. Not a dud in the bunch.
Season 5 and 6 - Continued the trend of all-around greatness.
Seasons 7-8-9 - By the now had started to lose its footing with less involvement from Larry David. The storylines were, by now, becoming increasingly bizarre and occasionally strained. Still some good episodes, but you could see fatigue starting to set in.
