Video Game Draft - Voting for Round 1

Welcome to round one of the Video Game Draft Tournament! 16 DVDTalkers drafted 10 console or portable video games. Now it is up you, the fine gamers of DVDTalk, to vote on which player has drafted the best collection.

Players have been randomly paired up by me picked slips of paper out of a bag. To vote reply to this post telling me who you think has the best lineup. Your vote will not count unless you vote on every pair! Your vote will not count if you edit the post where you vote!

Players in the game are encouraged to vote. Optionally, they are also allowed to post to this thread telling everybody why they think you should vote for their collection.

So, let the voting begin! Voting ends on Monday, November 14th, at the exact time of the timestamp of this post. Match-ups will be listed in the first reply to this post.

Good luck to all the participants!

A lot of tough matchups. It was also a bit disappointing to see the same games over and over again, just for different platforms.

Please don't read until after you vote.

Spoiler:

1. A tough match. Final Fantasy and Halo cannot be denied.
2. I kept flip-flopping back and forth on this one. Both strong lists.
3. Shenmue, Kid Icarus, Lunar and KotOR... oh my!
4. Halo 2. The mear fact that I still play almost nightly after 1 year is a testiment to this great game. Add in Final Fantasy X and Sonic CD.
5. A tough matchup again. But for me, Kingdom Hearts and Sonic stole this one.
6. By far the hardest race for me. Awesome games on both lists. The only fault I could find was in pick #10 for dashed.
7. I'm all about Final Fantasy. Toss in a few other strong games, it gets my vote.
8. What can I say. Everyone will vote for their own list. I did like some of the games on rainmaker's list.

To help explain my voting, I'll list systems I've owned: NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Playstation, PS2. I'm also familiar with a lot of Sega games, as I've had multiple friends with Sega systems through the years. Unfortunately, those whose 'best' titles come from XBOX or a handheld system will probably suffer a little in my votes. Voting here is a little tougher than the music thread, where if I haven't heard an album, I can find a place to check it out.

OK - I just noticed that I drafted Tekken 3 and it was already drafted - Whoops!

I'm changing my 10th round pick to Soul Calibur 2 - XBox

1. D_N_G - Loved orangecrush18's 1-2 punch, but DNG has a better mix top to bottom
2. maxfisher - I like his 1-4 as much as my own
3. maxflier - Not a huge fan of vintage sports games or the Master System, and KOTOR is one of my all-time faves
4. DJ_Longfellow - Really covered all the bases, my favorite collection besides my own
5. gimmepilotwings - I cursed him out for a bunch of his picks because I was after them, the only saving graces of Saturn and Dreamcast
6. cleaver
7. mano365 - found msdmoney too adventure heavy, otherwise a push
8. rainmaker - vintage picks hit all the right notes for me

1. D_N_G vs orangecrush18
Winner: orangecrush18. Did you even have to ask

2. maxfisher vs ChrisKnudson
winner: maxfisher. ChrisKnudsen has a MUCH more ballsy list (3DO AND CD-i picks), but I find it hard to vote
for a list with so many games I haven't played.

3. maxflier vs ryuryu2949
winner: ryuryu2949. Although I would have gone with NHL '93 (I want Wayne Gretzke's head to bleed),
He has more games I love. I must say that maxfiler has a really great list and if he were up against a number of other people, he would get my vote.

4. DJ_Longfellow vs keyed
winner: DJ_Longfellow. Despite his #10 pick, I just like his games more.

5. gimmepilotwings vs Jeremy517
winner: gimmepiolotwings. He should have grabbed his namesake, but what more could I want from a list.

6. cleaver vs dashed
winner: cleaver. I had to dock Dashed many points for NCAA Football 06. He would have won my vote if it weren't for #10.

7. mano365 vs msdmoney
winner: msdmoney. mano365 gets minus points for a gba port, but this one was very close.
mano's #5 is a great pick. Msdmony's #1, 2, 3, 8 and 10 weighed heavily in my decision.

8. rainmaker vs Vryce
winner: rainmaker. Not a bad game on his list. I am not such a fan of vryce's #6 and #8.

1 - D_N_G (although I love Castlevania SoN)

2 - ChrisKnudsen (this one took was tough, but Maniac Mansion is one of my all-time favs)

3 - Maxflier (that is just an awesome list, despite that damn Kid Icarus)

4 - keyed (for me, this came down to Mike Tyson vs. Tony Hawk, but I had to go with Hawk)

5 - gimmepilotwings (neither list did much for me, so I went with GTA: San Andreas)

6 - dashed (for the under-appreciated Simon's Quest)

7 - mano365 (as much as I wanted to give a shout out to Zombies..., Metal Gear & Super Mario were too tempting)

8 - Vryce (this was perhaps the most difficult choice of all, because Mega Man 2 & Final Fantasy VII are both in my top 5 of all time, but FF is just so friggin' awesome)

1. D_N_G: Tactics, GT3, SM3, SFII are impossible to beat although I really like Castelvania and Morrowind a bunch.

2. maxfisher: RE4 and Bionic Commando are sweet.

3. Maxflier: GTA3 and GT4 plus Kid Icarus which was my favorite NES game, make this an easy choice.

4. keyed: His all classic lineup trumps the Punch Out FFX from Longfellow. It doesn't help that I've never seen a Sega CD.

5. gimmepilotwings: Tough call but Soul Calibur is a great game.

6. cleaver: Original Zelda beats a bunch of games I haven't played.

7. msdmoney: This was basically a coin flip, but I like baseball games.

8. Vryce: Tetris and Mega Man II are cool but FF7, Metroid and the grand daddy Pitfall are ace choices.

Youch im getting killed. I know I shouldnt have picked up NCAA but being in college with a big D1 football school, its all eveyone over here plays. I should stuck with my gut and picked Breth of Fire III.

1. D_N_G - veeeery close but Final Fantasy Tactics wins me over

2. maxfisher - only for the fact that i havnt really played most of
ChrisKnudsen's games

3.ryuryu2949 -tecmo super bowl Best sports game ever + golden eye

4.keyed- has alot of good classic games

5. Jeremy517 - so this is where all the games i wante went

6. Dashed- goin for a comeback

7. mano365 - close but mano365 has more of the games I really enjoy

8. Vryce - yikes closest one yet but Secret of mana gives the edge

on a side note All these were extremely close. I have played a majority of these games and have loved each and every one of them so it was difficult to decide.

Winners:

1. D_N_G vs orangecrush18

Moving On: orangecrush18 - D_N_G's 4th and 7th picks were hard for me to pass up but orange has two of my favorites in Castlevania: SOTN (a game which I had hoped could be my first pick when all this started) and Majora's Mask.

2. maxfisher vs ChrisKnudsen

Moving On: ChrisKnudsen - Mr. Knudsen's eclectic mix of games gave him the win here, especially the choices of Parappa, Katamari, and Nights.

3. maxflier vs ryuryu2949

Moving On: maxflier - ryuryu has some great sports and fighting games on his list for sure, but then I've never been all that big in to them anyway. Max's 4th-7th choices really sealed the deal for me here.

4. DJ_Longfellow vs keyed

Moving On: DJ_Longfellow - A real toss up for me, but DJ wins on the strength of his Halo and FF picks.

5. gimmepilotwings vs Jeremy517

Moving On: gimmepilotwings - I wanted to kill GPW when he picked my favorite game of all time in Panzer Dragoon Saga, so naturally any list with it on it will have the upper hand. Really though both lists are strong I just like GPW's classics better.

6. cleaver vs dashed

Moving On: cleaver - Wow, again two very evenly matched opponents. Dashed's picks of Perfect Dark and NCAA hurt him in my book and I love cleaver's Herzog Zwei and God of War picks. Again you could go by genre with their picks and have near perfect matchups.

7. mano365 vs msdmoney

Moving On: mano365 - I'm obviously going to pick myself, but MSD has some great games and I wouldn't be surprised if he beats me. To the voter who lamented that my gba game cost me points because it is a port; is a game really a port if it is an entirely new game bearing a slightly new name?

8. rainmaker vs Vryce

Moving On: rainmaker - Vryce has my more favorite FF and I've never really cared for Tetris (never understood how anyone could play it for more than a few minutes without getting bored), ultimately though, rain's choices of Wind Waker and Silvergun (which I would bet would be in Pixy's first few picks if he were playing) and Vryce's choices of Fable and Chu Chu, are what decided it for me.

So where is PixyJunket anyway? He's usually a mainstay in the VidGame forum, right?

Winners in bold.

1. D_N_G vs orangecrush18. Halo should not be #2, but the list overall is better than orange's.

2. maxfisher vs ChrisKnudson

This one's easy. I only knew two of Chris' games.

3. maxflier vs ryuryu2949. Why so many new games, max? ryu gets this one.

4. DJ_Longfellow vs keyed. Halo 2 #1 pick? Night Trap? GTA? Someone else has the key to my heart. Sorry, Longfellow.

5. gimmepilotwings vs Jeremy517. No Pilotwings? C'mon! Zelda and Tony Hawk is enough for me.

6. cleaver vs dashed. Neither list is very dinstinctive (sorry, cleaver!). But cleaver has the edge.

7. mano365 vs msdmoney. WOW! Great list!

8. rainmaker vs Vryce. Great picks in this one too.

I don't know why 4/10 current-gen games would be considered a lot. Besides...a good game is a good game no matter what system it is on.
